2026 Jam Feedback/Ideas for next year Sticky

Post your feedback and suggestions for next year’s jam. Specifically, I want to know:

  1. Time: Do you feel like you had enough (or too much) time to finish your campaign?

  2. Assistance. Do you feel the help and resources provided (the advice on the jam page, the monthly check-in emails, the monthly voicecalls) helped you with your work?

  3. Challenges. What did you struggle with during the writing process?

  4. Word Count. Was the word limit an interesting/useful constraint, or just an unhelpful obstruction?

  5. Next Year. If I hold this again next year, what changes do you want me to make?

Hey so the last two I’ve joined have been a bunch of fun, and the extra exposure for fan-made content is indispensable in the community. Thank you so much for devoting so much of your time to this!

1 - I was writing a non-Jam DG scenario for the first month, so this one was a bit of a rush to get done, but I find 3 months is generous and fair! I think any longer would just lead to me procrastinating, and shorter would be unmanageable with a full-time job.

2 - While I haven’t engaged with the voice calls much because I’m on GMT/BST, but the more the community of writers can communicate and share ideas the more rich this thing becomes IMO.

3 - Time and my own ambition! I had to condense three episodes into 2 just because my habit of going “oo and this too” kinda burned through the 2 months I devoted to it. I think if I had wrapped up my aforementioned other DG scenario sooner this wouldn’t have been an issue!

4 - I think the word count helps keep the aim of the Jam clearly defined. Plus the non-Jam entry I did was 60,000 words and took about 9 months., and I found the main issue with larger word counts is the amount of editing and joining up for continuous narratives increases exponentially the more words there are on the page. Actually typing it all out ends up being a fraction of the time spent doing pass-through edits! Maybe a little looseness, like 10% leeway over, but as there’s no minimum anyway idk if this would effectively just be increasing the count 🤷

5 - To be perfectly honest I think what you’ve made is golden, and the amount of quality scenarios that come out of this that you continually advertise after the fact is so encouraging.

Congratulations on a great Jam everyone who entered, too! I’ve read everyone’s scenarios and they’re just fantastic.

1 - Felt like enough time with the knowledge the jam was coming.

2 - I didn’t make the calls but feedback is always important!

3 - I struggled with motivation and the layout, I wish I was more experienced with Affinity or another project by the time the jam rolled around .

4 - 60,000 words is a good constraint to keep things on track and not shoot for anything too ambitious.

5 - I really liked the community choosing the theme this year! I’d recommend doing that again. I wonder if doing something where authors are asked to review each other’s work would also be useful.

Regarding peer-reviewing in your last point: do we think assigning each author two campaigns would be a reasonable number? That way each campaign gets multiple perspectives for feedback, but reviewers aren’t overwhelmed reading every campaign with a fine comb.

I'm still thinking about it but I don't know if "assigning" would make people interested, but I also don't know how else to encourage feedback. Requiring people to read 2 other campaigns while writing their own might be a lot, but I'm mulling it over.
