I understand your decision for not releasing exclusively on this site. What I don't understand is abandoning it completely. What harm is there to releasing on multiple apps? Why can't you sell the game on Steam and on itch.io? Customers will have more options, you will have more reach, and if itch does take down your game, it won't affect the Steam release (and if somehow it gets taken down from Steam for BS reasons, itch will be there as the fallback).
You say you're sorry to the people that already purchased the game, and there's "not a whole lot" you can do, but there is something you can do: release the game on both storefronts.

Vintage Story was a game on itch that made over $100,000 - except, they never actually received that money because itch never paid them out. With all the NSFW censoring on itch, the risks of something like that happening are simply too high for me to consider right away. If Jane does release on itch, it will be after the Steam release by some margin.
