Description
This is the soundtrack to an imaginary game "Lost Signal" produced for OST Composing Jam 9. All songs were produced using only samples of fax machines, printers, or scanners with a Tonverk. Ableton Live was used for mastering.

Lost Signal is an atmospheric puzzle game about a lonely fax machine surviving the collapse of human civilization in a lighthouse.

In Transmission Pending (menu theme) the fax machine continues on operating and repairing itself long after being forgotten by what remains of humanity.

In Waterlogged a hurricane ravages the lighthouse while the fax machine struggles to survive the rapid flooding.

In Number Busy the fax machine finds renewed purpose as a small band of humans stumbles upon the lighthouse and makes contact with the remaining survivors.

In Clear Memory the humans have wiped the fax machine's storage to make way for the future. The fax machine continues operating happily having forgotten its past lives.

Theme

Songs of a Forgotten World

How does it fit the theme?

Wow! Most creative soundtrack I've heard so far! I absolutely love the various textures you created with each piece, especially with Transmission Pending (My favorite). Clear Memory is also another one of my favs with the pulsing wavy sounds half way through. I admire how much you were able to get out of this with limited resources. Great job.

Big fan of entries that go super far with their creativity like this. Making every single song with just fax machine noises is super cool!

You managed to make very distinct and different songs despite the extremely limited sources of sounds which is impressive and applaud worthy.

Very unique interpretation of the theme and very unique soundtrack as a whole, great job for the creativity !

There is a wide array of different sounds that you managed to create with such a specific amount of samples type so congrats for sticking to it and making it sound varies across the different tracks.

Speaking of the tracks, I think my favourite was Clear Memory, I really enjoyed the calm and soothing vibe of it (which I'm wondering how you create these sounds with the printers sounds that are usually harsher like in the previous tracks) so nice work !

Thanks! The core of Clear Memory is a fax dial tone sample played through a granular engine. The swell that happens is actually the beep at the start of the sample played as a chord. A low-pass filter and some reverb helped smooth out the sound but a lot of the difference is just not using much distortion like in the other tracks.

wonderful submission!!! i really like your use of sound effects in this submission to serve some sort of percussive nature. very unsettling in the best way. definitely high points for creativity - love this idea, and your execution of it! :)

I love the concept of a fax machine being the only relic of a past world!! The soundtrack fits very well with that theme too!
