You become translucent when you are hidden, and you are not transparent when you are not hidden. Hope this helped!

That actually makes a lot of sense, I'm surprised how I missed that. I think I got confused because the berry bush also turns translucent, this is cherry picking but I think it would've been nice if the berry bush shrunk instead of became translucent, making clear that it has to grow again for you to eat it.
