I am also more than happy to answer your questions about the story. The presence of the child is important for several reasons. First, it shows the connection to David as a role model in his life - Aaron participates in excavations with his father because one day he wants to be like him. It also makes David's death more tragic and makes the scene more emotional. I don't want to spoil too much from the future chapters, but this scene and Aaron himself will get more and more important as the story unfolds.
