Sometimes I am guilty of adding more when maybe more is not necessary, but I think sometimes so long as different layers don't distract from the melody, they can be really tasteful. As far as flourishes go, I can't know exactly what you are referring to, but for the main melody parts in Emberhen, as an example, I have a very soft background harp layer playing big swelling arpeggios. It's an example of something that is very subtle and maybe isn't necessary, but I didn't want to take it out because it does add to the majestic and flowy vibe at those parts. Thanks so much again!
