Description
The Debt of Living is a narrative-driven fantasy soundtrack written for the 9th OST Composing Jam hosted by Lone Rabbit that consists of 10 total tracks, with the first track being more of a leitmotif that's established.

Rather than following the story of a traditional protagonist, the soundtrack follows the journey of a half-elven writer who ventures into the world in search of answers (and to repay a debt of his own).

When I made the story for the "game," I was thinking something along the lines of story driven, choices matter, sort of game (Think Dispatch or Telltale games) with the soundtrack covering only one possibility the player, the half-elf, chose.

I wrote down the whole idea and rough arrangement on my notebook when I was out on vacation and established the arrangement fully on my laptop. On my laptop I used Cubase 12 Artist with stock VSTs to fully realize the arrangement and composition first while noting down which VSTs will be replaced with what I have on my PC back at home. Foley-made sound effects are also written down first as concepts on my notebook before recording it and processing on my PC. As for mixing and mastering, I could only do the bare minimum in fear of missing the deadline.

As for the story itself, this was something more of a personal sort of fantasy bucket list for me when I was but a wee child. I've always wanted to live in a fantasy world and have a sort of journal to document what I see there. The creatures, the people I meet, the different architectures, etc. In a way, this is my way of realizing that bucket list.

Message from the artist
If you enjoyed what you listened or even gave me some of your time to listen to my work, I thank you sincerely and I hope what I made can also inspire you just as everything around me has been a massive inspiration to who I am as a person and what I create. Now if you'll excuse me, I haven't had proper sleep in 3 days catching all sorts of deadlines and I am e x h a u s t e d.

Theme

Songs of a Forgotten World

How does it fit the theme?
The Debt of Living is essentially what the world that was documented by the half-elf was like before its eventual ruin. The original idea was Kana never actually died, she was taken away and used as a weapon and eventually sealed away after the Tyrant King, Dvinali, had no more use for her. She awakens to a weakened seal and a ruined world filled with ruins of a civilization and creatures that outlived mankind. Somewhere along her journey, she finds the half-elf's journal, and this journal is a sort of prequel to Kana's own journey.

Drop in first track is so whimsical and happy🥹 i love it’s vibes(as in vibrations) it has so much dynamic, to make tracks start slow and develop so bombastically after. Also the unsetelling ending of it with what i think are battle crys??

Second track is so tense with just few instruments. I already like the melodic part of this submission so much, on of the best ive heard so far since people here focused on sounddisign a lot

Ohh i will prolly read lore later i just wanna know how what i assume is accordion fits in that track

Chords and voice leadings of the third track are so good, they portray sorta misery so well. I so hope that whatever story it is has a happy ending with tye whimsical vibe from the first track

forth track has a lot of tension as well as the second but is more heroic ig? It feels like you at least have some chances of victory wheres second had that feel of a determined lose

Also here i just wanna note how good detuning/microtonal shifts sound

fifth track being that sorta broken main theme is really interesting with the tremolo at the back too..

Track 6 and i wanna say how cool and prominent the main theme’s melody is. Also the sounds at the end and start are so good for the atmospher

track 7 and HUUHH??? HUHHH?? Ig it’s not exactly throaght singing BUT DAMN THAT’S SUCH A COOL VOCAL/CHOIR THING YOU DID WOW

track 8 feels like the main theme finally kinda being completed, reprising itself before whatever the end of the story is

track9 brings so much closure to the submission

I love how the whole album has an idea and both sticks with it but also lets it be developed. This is criminally underrated, you really should have put it on either youtube or imbedded player

Im so happy i took the time to listen to it, it was awesome

Thank you so much for listening through till the end 🥹🥹. As for the second track, it's divided into three parts, with the first being "elegant" and "clean" to describe his main line of work, which is assassination. Second part with the accordion is supposed to subtly represent his commoner upbringing while the orchestration is supposed to still represent his elegance, because the second part is supposed to be his conversation with the main character. The third part is fully about his commoner upbringing, where his mother used to sing the song "Bayu Bayushki" for him, which transitions to Elisheva, the adopted daughter of Malakor (The character behind Forced Freedom), being her main theme/motif, because Malakor truly cared for Eli and only wanted her to be what he used to be, just a normal kid. He'd always sing her to sleep with the only children song he knows from his mother, which is Bayu Bayushki.

I didn't need to listen anything after Track 0. But I did so anyway. The quality is top notch. Nothing to say. If I really had to find anything to point out, only the reverb felt kind of "empty" (I first noticed only in "Forced Freedom" and "Raqis Allayl").

"Elisheva" is a personal highlight of mine!

"Raqis Allayl" sounded less realistic than the rest, somehow.  The main instrument playing the theme sounded very artificial, and so did the percussions.

"Death Has Bloomed"'s got that kinda eerie and unsettling atmosphere, but somehow I think you could have pushed it even further... Just kidding, it didn't fully bloom yet, had to wait 'til the next track lol

The OST made me think of Shenmue most of the times, which is one of my favorite games ever.

Hope you had a very well deserved rest buddy, you worked hard and your effort was not vain!

On a side note, I'd like to know how you came up with those names, I'm quite curious.

As for the names, I'm actually very interested in linguistics and etymology! As someone who was born and had to follow the same religion as my parents, I grew interest in the arabic language as a whole and I tend to do a whole bunch of deep research for absolutely no reason. Raqis Allayl means something along the lines of dancer of the night, which is basically what Hariri Laylana is (The character). Hariri originated from harir which really just means "someone who works with silk" since she is a belly dancer as a side-job but works mainly as the leader of Corvus' "clean up" team. Laylana originated from the term "Layl" which means night, and the ana was just my addition to make it sound more feminine (though im pretty sure it also has some etymology behind it?). As for Elisheva, it is the old (original) form of the name "Elizabeth" from hebrew, meaning "God is my oath." Lore-wise, she was given the name due to her birth parents basically wanting their child to have powers so they could live good and made a pact with a deity and named their child "Devoted to God" and gave her powers before Malakor took her in and basically adopted her and gave her the nickname Eli. Malakor is where it gets interesting because it is derived from many languages. My main inspiration was latin, with Mal originating from "malus" meaning bad or ill or wrong, and Kor originating from "cor" which is heart. Combining the "Mal" and "Cor" makes Malakor mean something along the lines of "dark heart." While in reality, my baby's real name is actually Piomo (Literally just a name i found cute with no meaning), which was given by his biological mother, and he was just given the name Malakor by his biological father who was a tyrant king, after razing the city where his mother lived. Corvus is, well, crow or raven. It's latin but it is literally the genus name for the family of crows and ravens, "corvidae." NOWWWWW we getting to the good part. The Asian part which is what i am LMAOOO. Ah-Yue's original name was Xuan Yue. Xuan can mean multiple things, in which i chose two meanings of it, "elegant" and "mysterious." It's very much layered because Xuan can mean many different thing depending on the chinese characters. Hell, even in Vietnamese, it means an entirely different thing, being "spring." Yue mainly means moon, and "Ah" is just a term of endearment or a sign of closeness to said person, so "Ah-Yue" is literally just what he prefers to be called because he wants to be close to everyone despite having his heart closed off after Kana was taken away. Kana (Which is Japanese) has multiple meanings depending on written kanji, but i used the meaning "to play music" (奏) and "beautiful" (佳奈, common Japanese girl name). Kana was taken away by the Tyrant King, Dvinali (Dvi meaning two and Nali meaning channel or barrel, and together it literally means two channels or double-barreled, hinting at the way he rules his kingdom :3). Gu Shoushan was a very fun name to come up with. Gu by itself is often associated with the "Gu poison" from murim manhwas (and actual real life rituals) where essentially, multiple poisonous/venomous insects are put together in a jar and whatever is left in the jar has the strongest poison/venom. However, the Gu (顾) i took means "to look after" or "care for" because his character is essentially Ah-Yue's and Kana's father figure. The name Shoushan is actually a combination of "Shou" (壽) meaning longevity, and "Shan" (山) meaning mountain. Essentially, naming someone "Shoushan" is basically a wish for them to have an enduring, stable, and long life, and the "Gu" is a surname that gives him the loving uncle, father figure character.

So yeah. Uhm. TL;DR: I'm a huge nerd about language :D

This is the reason I'm such a sucker for this kind of explanation! There's so much research, so much inside lore which gets unexplained unless you get to know all these pieces of information. Like, what can I even say? Hahahahahaha

Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this! Much appreciated, buddy.

felt the aura of that title 10 scrolls away 🔥🔥🔥 percussion work across the ost was very cool! same with the addition of vocals in unmoving mountain to which i actually really liked!! i do wish this ost was posted on streaming services just for ease of access since having to manually click to open each track was a bit of work. other than that awesome job!!

Developer

My muse has commented on my submission- AAAAA THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I am planning on releasing this on my YouTube channel as part of my comeback (I'm a VTuber (A bad one) that's on hiatus right now), but I didn't want to come back just for this only since I have many things in the works :d. Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NOTICING THIS STUPID IDIOTIC DUMB PERSON AND COMPLIMENTING MY WORK AAAAAAAAAAAAA-

I still remember listening to "perhaps, in another life" and being completely motivated to finish my degree in music and picking up drawing again.

Sounds great! For some reason the composition reminds me of pikmin's ost

idk what instruments you exactly used, but they really help with the vibe you're conveying here!!

raqis allay kinda reminds of the boss battle theme from chrono trigger
