how the game fits the uplifting theme?
The Cartographer's Trail focuses on the sheer joy of discovery, exploration, and the beauty of the open sea. While the story features a clever twist, the core experience is designed to be highly atmospheric and adventurous. The act of piecing together a legendary mystery and navigating beautiful, peaceful island environments is meant to leave the player feeling inspired by the thrill of the unknown
how the game fits the ocean theme?
The entire core loop revolves around traversing the open ocean. Players must navigate a vast sea to travel between mysterious, undiscovered islands. The environment heavily features ocean mechanics, naval exploration, and coastal environments as you track down Captain Vance's nautical trail.

I am speaking only for myself (personal opinion) - the idea of game jams is to try out ideas and get feedback. I've been to many game jams (started this year) and this is perhaps the first submission I see focused entirely on graphical realism.
The choice of making a large Windows build already limits the accessibility of the game => smaller amount of players who are going to give you feedback. By using high polygon assets you limit that pool of potential players further. Disclaimer: I could not play much because of lag which was most probably caused by running the game in a sandbox (in other words I make no comment on how optimised the game is).
So before we even get to the important part - your ideas, there is already a very small portion of players who can access the game to give you feedback.
Unity is a popular and proven technology. What matters is how you use it. What is the creative idea? You wrote that the main goal is to have the player sail to an island and then walk inside the island (movement from point A to B). What distinguishes your game from other pirate/sailing games?
I advise you to strive for graphical realism only after players have validated a stylised version of the game.
Good luck!
Really appreciate the detailed feedback! You're completely right about the accessibility and build size limitations—going for heavy 3D assets on a Windows-only build definitely cuts down the player pool, especially for a quick jam queue. The core loop for The Cartographer's Trail was mostly an experiment in atmosphere and a personal challenge to push environment design solo, but I totally agree that focusing on a tighter, more stylized scope or a WebGL build is the way to go for future jams to keep things accessible. Thanks for taking the time to write all that out, it gives me a lot to think about for my next project!
game is very good
i dont really have any notes on it
good job!
it would be greatly appreciated if you played my game as well
Seems ok, quite ambitious. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to do once I got on the Islands, maybe I missed something? The page specifically lists no combat, there was definitely ship combat.
Ah, no worries at all, thanks for playing it! Regarding the combat, the page description said no combat initially, but I actually ended up adding a bit of action late in dev because I thought players might get bored just walking around without any tension.
As for what to do, you just have to explore the island and find the hidden treasure near the main landmark first—once you grab that, the path back to the ship opens up. Appreciate you giving it a shot and leaving feedback❤️
