Fun twist on snake! You made a tricky palette look good, and the music fit really well.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing! I'm glad we could make something that was enjoyable.

aaaah I'm so bad at Snake games lol

I'm a snek I'm a snek oh no wall

On a more serious note, it makes good use of what I'd consider a challenging palette choice. The music worked well, at least for the first couple rooms since I didn't make it farther than that in like 5 tries, so I dunno if you got more tracks later. The sibilant dialogs are endearing. I did instinctively try arrow keys when I booted it up because I'm evil and want left-handed controls lol

It does feel surreal reviewing your game instead of being a contributor to it, though.

Developer

Interestingly enough, the palette choice was a bit of an accident! We had a few options to choose from and the sprites already started getting made in the wrong one by accident, but we rolled with it. Claude's still getting the hang of the pixel art workflow so we had to do a few iterations to get the colors to interact with each other a little better, but there were definitely some other palette choices in my mind that I think would have looked a bit better.

We've actually got way more tracks than what made it into the game (some are in the content pipeline but never used, some are even still being produced!) Integrating the music was a bit rushed on Saturday, and I didn't check if the track used in the main menu actually looped and it doesn't, whoopsie. I wasn't sure where to make use of all the tracks, but my favorite one is triggered when you enter the last room, including a trigger back to the previous track when you go back to the previous room.

The input controls you probably remember from previous jams is still in the boilerplate, so even though we didn't end up having a menu option to configure controls, you can still go to the build to find a "config" folder generated on first run, with a JSON file of ASCII code serialized input bindings, so you can make it more comfy.

A classic game revisited with new bells and whistles! I think you have a good idea here and enjoyed playing! Let me know if you want any constructive criticism too!

Developer

Thanks so much! We wanted to try and keep things really barebones so there would be a complete, playable game with a clear win state within the time period. Please do provide any criticisms you have!

I don't have a lot to say but I do think some of the level design makes certain movements impossible and if this was ever fleshed out more I would say adding just a bit more purpose to each level/zone could help with the overall pace and feel of the game! Well done making something in a short amount of time!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah, the level design is a little bit of an afterthought, and we had a fun moment with it when we sat down for it. The room that has just a chest with a key next to it was an idea where you could either open the chest and take more challenging routes to get a key for progression, or skip the chest and save the key for an easier time getting to the next room. It didn't get a lot of playtesting though, so that's a solid criticism.

Ahh that makes more sense! I felt like the chest was a necessary part of the level! Still, well made game and keep up the great work!
