How does your game meet GBJam's theme
The game is all about old gold: a cursed treasure chest, coins scattered across an island, and a grumpy ghost who wants every last piece back. Collect the gold to reclaim your flesh and blood. The more you bring back, the more of yourself you get!

Thank you for letting me know.
I’m sad to hear about the decision, but of course I respect it. I would still like to clarify that the final artwork in my game was neither AI generated nor stolen. I did take inspiration from other sources, but I spent a considerable amount of time drawing and reworking the graphics myself. The four cutscene images in particular took much more work than I had originally planned.
One reason I was able to spend so much time on those images was that my own engine, which I had already developed for the previous jam, was very well prepared for this type of game. That gave me more time to focus on the artwork.
I understand that my earlier comments may have given the wrong impression, and I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer about my process.
Thank you for taking the time to review the game, and for your kind words about its ideas.
Very nicely polished game, control lay-out was a lil funky at first but was satisfying when mastered. Some animal's I didn't visually know if you can jump on them or not. Great level design overall!
The cut scenes are so cool, amazing art, cool supporting story. I LOVE the mechanic of separating head and body and the puzzles are very well designed too. I don't know if you've ever player helheim hassle but it reminded me of that. And to do all that in your own game engine is impressive and doing it in your own game engine in a gamejam is just insane, well done!
Haha, thank you so much! I've always been pretty good at "borrowing" art... uh, I mean, getting inspired! A lot of the magic is just cleverly combining things, scaling them, and reducing the color palette, followed by a lot of manual touch-ups until they somehow look good together, haha. All that manual work on the cutscenes took me FOREVER, and there was a lot of trial and error!
And my so-called game engine is really just a collection of things that probably only I know how to use.
I haven't played Helheim Hassle yet, but I'll definitely check it out! Really glad you enjoyed the puzzles and the head and body mechanic. Thanks a lot for the lovely comment!
Fantastic entry. It has a nice amount of content, the graphics are fantastic although the quality of the pixel art made me wonder if the actual game itself is an excuse to show it off, because the game tiles/sprites (although lovingly made and very much faithful to gameboy aesthetics) seems slightly less insane quality than the pixel art itself.
Theme interpretation and style is off the charts, and my only real complaint is that the controls are hard to manage on a keyboard and I kept wishing for support for my gamepad.
All in all, this is a competent little game with okay in-game graphics and STELLAR pixel art. Like, charming and over the top good pixel art screens for cutscenes/etc. The "vibe" is most definitely here.
Thank you so much for the lovely review! I'm really happy you enjoyed the game and its atmosphere!
It's funny you mention the difference between the cutscenes and the in-game graphics, because that's pretty much what happened during development. After getting the core mechanics working, I started working on the cutscenes and ended up spending way more time on them than I originally planned. The in-game graphics got only a fraction of that time, and before I knew it, the jam deadline was here! I would have loved to polish them a bit more.
And thanks for the feedback on the controls! Gamepad support would definitely make all the head-throwing and body-switching more comfortable.
Thanks again for playing and for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review!
This game could not be more Gameboy! The art was fantastic, the gameplay and mechanics were an absolute blast, and the music fit perfectly! I may not have gotten all of my flesh back on my first run, but I intend to be back for a later one to try and get all of those coins back! My flesh will be mine once more!
