How does your game meet GBJam's theme
Our game, Tião Tostão, matches the secondary theme of "old gold" by having gold coins that can be collected throughout the level. But upon collecting them, you slow down. Collect too many and you might not make it out. Don't get greedy, and remember, your life is more valuable than any gold, no matter how old.

I thought the mermaid was my friend.

Swim controls felt very fluid and intentional, graphics were very appealing, and I really liked the color palette.

Cool concept! I just would have liked to have the controls and mechanics explained more clearly. Specially not having to read the "How does your game meet GBJam's theme" to understand how it actually works. I saw the "this coin is heavy" but once i was in the second level, it felt like what i was meant to do was pick up the coins. More important tho: Once you die your coins dont reset which makes for two scenarios: 1. once you die from having too many coins (or however it works), you get into a loop of dying which then stops but youre stuck at your heavy state and cant do anything to drop them (or wasnt shown how). 2. you can recollect already collected coins once you die since they respawn and you keep as many as you had.

I wanted to keep playing, but I ran into a bug: when you drown, you respawn without a health bar and immediately drown again, so you get stuck in a loop. I also noticed the character looks a bit blurry when it swims.

A good point; I'm sorry about that

Fun game.  The mermaid (mer-thing?) took me by surprise the first time, and I'm not sure I want to know what it was doing to me. :D

I don't 100% like the mechanic where you slow down when you pick up coins, especially since you have to go out of your way to get them in the first place.  Maybe a way to drop them?  Or I guess that's where being "witty" comes in, knowing when to forget the gold and run!

The game bugs out when you drown, though.  You respawn with no air, and drown again immediately upon picking up a coin, and getting more air doesn't actually do anything. (Though you probably know this)  The game seems to crash entirely if a mermaid grabs you mid-drowning animation.

It didn't entirely feel like a  Gameboy game. Especially the five-color palette (white, black, yellow, green, and purple).  The Gameboy font was a nice touch, though!

All in all, though, a fun experience.  I'm looking forward to seeing the final product. :D

Yes, it’s a mermaid, and it seemed like a terrifying death to us!

Thanks for the observations and for appreciating the cleverness of the coins :)

We hope to deliver something better soon!
