I will say that having GB-like sound was *not* a requirement in GBJAM-14, so I didn't rate anyone based on that, just on how well they used sound and music.  (Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to check what my ratings for the game were now that the voting is over)

Oh!  The Atlas coordinates!  I wonder if I can use the Atlas ID number to figure out which version of the store I just left and replace it with a corresponding Atlas ID from the other tileset?  Worth a try tomorrow!

Oh, one issue I found when replaying it on stream... it is possible to go through one wall, walk into the next room, and get stuck in the corner.

I had to restart the whole game to get out of it.

Congrats on sixth place in the Gameboy Soul category!

And my final stream before the voting closes, from Saturday:

I'll still play games on my stream (starting in about three and a half hours) while working on my own, but of course the voting will be over by then.

I really wish I *had* played this one on-stream.  I loved it.  Great atmosphere, melancholy story.  I thought it was odd there was a turn-based fight at the beginning of the game but then never again.  Was I just lucky, or was that intentional?

Still, great game.

My stream's done until Monday, when the voting will be over, but I can still play and rate it right now.

Fun game!  A little short, but otherwise great!

I liked what little I saw, but that was *very* little.  The first enemies just *charged* at me and killed me in seconds.  The sword was very hard to use, didn't deal much damage, and didn't do any knockback, so it didn't stop them from just sitting on me and draining my health instantly.

You get 5 stars in sound for the cute dog bark alone, but I couldn't finish the game and ran into a game-breaking but where I got stuck in the wall and couldn't leave the room.

Fun while it lasted, though!

(1 edit)

I'll tell you right now, the terrible pun in the title is the reason I selected this one.  .... more in a few, after I've actually played it. :D

Pretty short and not even remotely difficult (other than sometimes getting stuck on ladders).  I got 123 ounces of gold and cleared the mine!

It gets an extra point for The Void, actually (especially the little "bonus level" at the end).  You still got further in your game than I did in mine, so points for that, too!

I'm not sure if I finished it, but I collected and reassembled all six games.  Took me a little while to work out how to find the parts, maybe that needs to be more clear?

Not very long, but cute and clever.  The graphics were really solid for a game jam game.  (The thumbnail is why I clicked on it)

I killed all the enemies on the second level, and I guess that was it?  Tough to get the hang of, had some visual effects that the Gameboy wouldn't really have been able to do (notably the explosions), but not a bad start.

... I have to admit, I probably only got to the end because of the secret magical cheat code.  (I used the Full Purse cheat, then got the gaff and just kept paying to upgrade it, so I was hitting the Drowned King with a +9 weapon) :D  But when I wasn't dying every five seconds, I was enjoying it.  And I *still* died, magical cheat code or not, so the cheats are not an automatic "I Win" button, which was also nice

Reminds me of Puzzle Bobble a little bit.  As others have said, the first level is the hardest, but the upgrades make it *exponentially* easier.  Once I got them all, it was difficult to actually lose.  I was just filling the screen with drill bullets bouncing everywhere. :D

Fun game!

I must have missed a crab somewhere because I only had 4/5 at the end, but I finished it!  Had trouble jumping from the Level 3 area to the platform above it for some reason... until I suddenly stopped having trouble doing it.  (And, as someone else said, the spike hit boxes were somewhat unforgiving, which was really only a major issue in the Tiger Shark level).  That "final battle" threw me entirely off, and it took me a few tries (and some guesswork) to get through it, but it was a nice change of pace from the frankly-stressful Tiger Shark level. :D  All in all, fun!

Actually, I did have one other comment: having to stop to interact with objects and the mouseholes was a bit unintuitive.

Short but cute.  Like this comment. :)

Jorji is from Papers, Please - you're apparently the one making the fake passports that he's trying to use in that game. :D

(1 edit)

The ring-sizing puzzle was a little tedious (and I've *always* been terrible at those slider puzzles, so I appreciate the "give up" button), but it was fun overall!  The references were fun, though I'm pretty sure the image of Jorji was taken *directly* from Papers Please.

(Also, a funny title, which is what made me play the game in the first place)

The art was amazing.  Gameplay was fun, but the battles were *hard*.  (Also, if you die, there seems to be no way to restart the game, you have to reload the whole page to replay the game)

... also, I'm not actually sure I found the treasure, but I *did* get off the island, so I'm counting that as a win!  Fun game, and I'm looking forward to seeing the hotfixed version after the jam is over!

It's the last full day of voting, so I'm going to be playing and rating random games on today's stream.  You can still jump in and request I play your game before it ends!

After today, you can find me on the Continue Your Game jam (where I'll continue working on my unfinished game Nostalgia Gold from *this* Jam), and posting in this thread.

So I won't just be writing Devlogs, I also stream my Game Dev Adventures every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3 pm CEST on Twitch, with replays saved on YouTube.  I also stream *playing* games on Saturdays or on special occasions, like when I streamed playing and rating the games from the GBJAM-14 last week.

Join me so you can not just read my carefully-composed thoughts after each gamedev session, but watch me stumble over every rake along the way. :D

Yeah: /jam/cyg-14

It's more focused on writing Devblogs as your game progresses than on the game itself, but I joined it because my own GBJAM-14 entry was so unfinished. :D

Those chiptunes were *really* CPU hogs.  The game took a few minutes to load and the browser froze for a few seconds before each track (and this is a new computer; I bought it in December).  But as for the game itself, it was great.  (Once I realized that each style of music had a "correct" action, and it wasn't just random trial and error)

A very different take on old gold records than what my record-buying game is/was going to use. :D

That was amazing.  That felt very polished for a game put together for a game jam in only ten days.  I think the only weirdness that jumped out at me is that the houses in the Brambewoods are not safe.  You can still get into random encounters inside them.  I hope you finish the rest of this one.  (There's a "Continue Your Game" Game Jam that starts in about nine hours....) :D

(1 edit)

I am!  I'll put your game on the list for today!

I have to say, I'm intrigued for this one, because you had a similar idea to what I had for my game, making gold records the "Old Gold". :D

(1 edit)

.... oh, wait, I don't have to *remember* what I was doing, I have a *video* :D  And, yeah, that's exactly what happened.  I moved a sloop with only 1 HP across some rocks, and the game crashed right as I hit the rocks.

I *think* it happened on the enemy's turn, but I don't remember exactly what was happening at the time, sorry.

I stream every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, so... yeah.  I'll play this on Wednesday. :D

Edit: This game looks like my kind of jam (no pun intended), so I think I'll enjoy it.

Well, that was fun!  Stream playback is here:

The overworld/battle pixel art was very much Gameboy Standard, but the fourth-wall-breaking tone was very much Earthbound.  (Also, the constant palette changes were more Super Gameboy than standard Gameboy).  The game was a lot shorter than I expected, but that's understandable when you only have 10 days to work on it.  Good sound effects and music, and overall an enjoyable experience.

Exactly the sort of game that's in my wheelhouse.  Give me that Final Fantasy Tactics or Shining Force goodness any day.   The game does feel slow, and I ran into an error before I could finish it:

Other than that, I was enthralled, and plan to play it again. :D

Cute and hilarious game.  Easiest Snake variant I ever played, and that's not an insult.  (I normally dislike Snake) :D

I got over 100 the first time, and the game got even cuter.  (The second game I wasn't so lucky)  Do the graphics change again at 200 or higher scores, or is that it?  Either way, good job!

Simple, straightforward, and addicting.   I liked that you didn't have to max absolutely *everything* out to win (but it helped!)  The Mage is an excellent support character, especially once he gets his heal, but the Archer seemed underpowered compared to the other two, with fewer HP and less damage than either of the others.  (Really, the Fighter was carrying the party; when he died, the other two *quickly* followed)

I'm also not sure what Quick March actually did, since movement doesn't seem to be an aspect of gameplay.  Unless it affects dodge rate?

But, generally, high marks all around.  I couldn't stop playing it until I was done. :D

I had a *lot* of trouble getting anywhere in this game, between the short oxygen timer, the inaccurate sonar, and the small number of hits you can take.  And all the upgrades seemed so far away considering how limited your oxygen supply is at first, so finding even *one* gold nugget was difficult (let alone getting back before your oxygen ran out and/or you smacked into too many walls trying to hurry).  And since you had to pay to repair damage, that made it even harder to get the other upgrades (which required ten, fifteen, or even twenty nuggets).

I like the concept, it's just very difficult to actually play without blowing up repeatedly. :D

Still streaming, and I'll play it today!  (Stream technically started already) :D

I've added it to the list for today!  Stream starting... well, any minute now, actually.
