The change in gameplay styles was really interesting, going from platforming to top-down sections. The music had a strong retro feel too, not just because it was chiptune, but in the composition itself.

This felt like a very complete project. I was surprised to find so much story and lore tucked into the journal.

Personally, I would’ve toned down the sliding in the platforming sections a bit, but I’ve always preferred Mega Man physics to Mario, so I’m biased lol.

Great entry, and I’m really happy to have this loaded on my Game Boy. Also cool that you can choose which island you want to start at, made it feel a bit open world!

Very cool! Love the colours and the vibe. I thought the platformer movements were a bit too "glidy", so it was difficult to make precision jumps.

Developer

Yeah, I may have gotten a bit overzealous with the sliding lol. I kinda felt like it was a good way to keep some challenge in the more mundane platforming areas but I’d probably tone it down next time.

A sweet game! Loved the fact that it turns from a platformer into a top down dungeon crawler 👍

I’m curious if some kind of ship battles were planned? There’s Ship Health next to the Player Health, but nothing that reduces it (as far as I’m aware!) Would be cool to have Pirate-y ship combat on the GB too!

Thanks for making it and sharing it with us!

Thanks! There’s a small chance of encountering an enemy ship on the overworld and having a “battle” which is really just a single event, you hit them or they hit you based on who makes a higher D12 roll.

I originally intended to make a bigger overworld with ships sailing around that you had to fight and a little upgrade system but I ran out of time lol.

cool game! it somehow really surprised me when it turned from jump and run to top down perspective. the change was fun!

the background assets are a little busy for my taste sometimes, but i guess that's down to taste. i also think it would be cool if the potions added to hp directly since they're used automatically when the player has no hp left. would help keeping track of the actual hp imo. anyway thanks for making and sharing this game!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I totally agree about the potions. Didn't even think of that until after the fact. I made it so you can take them as needed from the inventory but in hindsight it would've been more streamlined to just use them automatically when they're picked up. I'll also take your note about the backgrounds into consideration for next time. Thanks!

Aaa, I love the atmosphere and the music, but I'm really bad at it hahaha

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! I loved your game but I also suck at it so I get it lol

This is amazing! Its incredible you got this much done in this time! I love the fact that there is both top down and side scroller sections in this, it really keeps up the interest while playing.

If I had a gameboy, I would download the rom and play it on it, but sadly I dont have one.
Great job!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!

I actually intended to add a lot of other things that I ended up not having the time for but I’m hyped about what I shipped either way.

I sincerely doubt I would’ve made it at all if my wife hadn’t done the music for me lol.

I'm in the same boat. If my girlfriend hadn't helped with the art, and made the cutscenes, my game would've sunk before it even got it's maiden voyage 💀

great action platformer ! the fisrt maze was so hard !

Developer

Thanks a lot for checking it out!

I originally intended to make the dungeons a lot crazier. I had a bunch of scripting done to randomize them even more (item placements, additional rooms, layouts, etc) but I kept running into bugs that I knew I wouldn’t have time to account for so I scaled everything back.

Still happy with how it turned out though!

Nice title lettering, hand drawing a script face that still reads at gb size is hard and that one lands. and splitting the hud into ship hearts and player hearts and shards, all labelled, means you know where you stand at a glance. nice job
