So good. Like the first NES Zelda, but amazing!!
I didn't manage to get very far but it looks like a very charming game!
Nice game. I love the graphics and the music also great. And I like the animation for the loading screen.
I'm glad you like it! For the animation: At first I planned to give Shadows the timelapse to make it look as if the game is being drawn in front of the player's eyes, but it looked not so good so It's actually made the other way arround and It's animated by removing some parts of layers each frame and played backwards.
If you have time, I would be happy if you also check out my game.
First of all, let me just say that a lot of work went into this game! Bosses, different modes of gameplay, loads of mechanics, even an inventory and save system. I dug into your content and saw that you had a bunch more planned!
Aside from what's already been mentioned in comments, I'll also add that the font is the only asset you're allowed to use an external source for.
Great job!
Thank you for taking the time and trying it!
I had 4 Dungeons lined up in the beginning... Big Plans...
Only got 1.5 of them in the jam and virtually no story lol
We took full advantage of the Fonts but sadly we still had to edit them to make them work correctly at that resolution
It was a sleepless week but thank goodness for great teammates or none of this would have been possible
I can confirm the Linux build works.
The "No I am poor" line in the inn is genuinely hilarious. A friend posted a no-context clip of that in a group chat (they're also a participant in this jam) and I sussed out which game it was to encounter it for myself. Intentional or not, it is perfect.
Movement feels a tad stiff for the action-adventure combat the game expects. Taking a note from the GB Legend of Zelda game might be useful here, allowing diagonal movement for better positioning and mobility. Alternatively, early Ys bump combat could be an avenue worth exploring instead.
The soundtrack was good. The overworld map music was a cut above the other tunes IMO.
Graphics are also good. Nothing struck me as lacking visually. Which, under the time crunch of a jam, is a good sign.
Thank you for confirming the Linux Build Works!
I am glad that you enjoyed my one little joke :)
its a jam everything needs work! we are planning on building this game out a little bit more so i will definitely look into them thank you.
thankfully I had an amazing team for the art and music to make it this far
Awesome game! I was actually about to give up at the beginning because I totally missed what grandpa was asking me to do... but once I figured it out, I was amazed by how much stuff is in this game! The 2 mini-bosses and so much gameplay variety, from the top-down exploration to the boat and minecart minigames. I really enjoyed all of it! The music, colors, and Game Boy vibe were great.
The only minor things I noticed were that the fade-to-black transitions used a standard fade rather than the limited color palette (which took away from the GB aspect a bit), and the sword rotation looked a bit off sometimes. But overall, this is easily my favorite game I've played today. Great job!
If giving the books to the king was the end of the game than I completed it!
Thanks for taking the time to play it!
Yeah, the sword animation is a bit strange ran out of time to make an actual animation for it
Never gave the transition / Fade a thought too many things to think about I will keep it in mind for next year. (Not that is madders for the jam since I can't reupload it but that's fixed thanks for pointing it out)
Congrats! you Beat the game!
super fun little RPG. The hitboxes for the enemies were unforgiving but that seemed very gameboy haha. The music is an absolute BOP and I enjoyed every track. Great submission!
Thanks for Playing!
when I was playing some old GameBoy Games recently they were unforgiving compared to modern games tried to capture some of that feeling.
