Alley Brawl's itch.io pageHow does your game meet GBJam's theme
We read "Old Gold" as two ideas: Old as old age, and Gold as a golden age, someone's glory days. Our hero, Ki Hadjar, is an aging street fighter whose golden age is behind him, and his legend, "Old Gold", has been stolen by a young gang leader named Rojali. Each run is one night in which the old man fights to reclaim that golden age. The theme is also in the look of the game: the whole screen uses a warm gold-toned four-color palette.

Hello. Unfortunately we've had to disqualify this submission on suspicion of AI, particularly in the character art. If you want to contest it, you may, but if found guilty you may be banned from future jams. We have a zero tolerance policy for AI and take this rule very seriously.
I hope you decide to join again next year with legitimate art and code.
Additionally, mouse input is not allowed in this jam, but this is a minor issue and has no bearing on why this project was disqualified.
Thank you to the jam host for organizing this game jam and taking the time to review and play my game.
Since I could not find a direct/private messaging feature on itch.io, I am posting this clarification publicly in this reply section.
Regarding the allegations about using AI for the game's art, I would like to explain my asset creation workflow from start to finish to clear up any misunderstanding.
1. Reference & Initial Concept Stage
I used AI (Gemini) strictly at the beginning to explore visual styles that aligned with the foundational tutorial I followed. The images generated by AI are NOT the final assets used in the game, but merely served as visual references.
2. Sprite Sheet Mapping Stage (CorelDRAW)
I brought those reference images into CorelDRAW to convert them into vector format.
Next, I stacked and aligned the vector images onto the reference sprite sheet. The goal was to ensure the positions, proportions, and frame structures matched the animation/code already programmed in the game engine.
3. Pixel Art Creation Stage (PiskelApp)
I initially tried creating pixel art directly in CorelDRAW and experimented with software like Aseprite, but I struggled and felt frustrated due to my limited drawing skills.
Then I found Piskel App online, where I could draw and use those stacked vector layouts as a guide.
Since I lack drawing experience, I couldn't redraw full dynamic body poses for every frame. Instead, I kept the main body static with minor redraws, and only moved or animated the arms and legs over the base sprite sheet.
(Note : I try to insert image of my process, but it say missing token when I reduce the image, it say "post: body: expected text between 1 and 20480 character. So I will only reply with text only.)
I sincerely apologize if using AI in the early stage of this process caused any controversy, especially since I am not yet capable of creating all visuals 100% from scratch. However, I want to emphasize that AI involvement was for visual style references during initial ideation.
Regardless of this explanation, I completely respect and leave the final decision to the jam host. If the workflow I used is considered a violation of the rules and cannot be tolerated, I am fully prepared to have my game disqualified from this game jam, and I accept the consequence of being banned from participating in future game jams.
I respect your honesty, and appreciate it. To be clear, AI should not be used in any part of the creation process - this includes concept art. The disqualification stands, but you're more than welcome to join us next year, hopefully with zero AI assistance. Learning pixel art, or any art medium, is a really rewarding experience, and I'd encourage you to give it a real go for GBJAM 15.
Once again, thank you for being honest and we'll leave it there for now. Hope to see you next year.
I also tried a beat em up, I love your scrolling and music
This game is sick! I liked the crispness of the punches and kicks. I don't know if you are supposed to be able to do this, but for the boss, I had the two damage upgrades, so I was able to spam and kill him relatively easily.
Fun game! Love the visual and auditory feedback for attacks! The end boss almost got me, but I prevailed in the end lol But an outline or different colour for the boss's shorts would be good since it's the same colour as the ground and so it makes him look like he's floating or cut in half haha. Overall great game!
I completed the tutorial series by Gad so I'm glad you credited him. Great game the fighting works really well. I finished but I like how upgrades off replay value to choose different ones next time. Wish I'd had a change to do upgrades for my game
Hey, I played your game, Alley Brawl. It already feels super polished, even though it only has one stage. The combat feels good, and there's good feedback when hits land, both on enemies and on me. The sound was good too. Overall, an amazing game. The only problem I see is with the theme. Technically your game does have it, and it's a cool interpretation of it, but I feel like I didn't get to see much of it in the game besides the art and the explanation on the games page.
Very satisfying to beat up the level enemies! I had a couple glitches where the boss kept getting stuck off screen, but he was still no match for my Kung-Fu! Good job, excited to see you expand on it. Also the fighting animations are great.
