I LOVE BARRY THE BOOKWORM! He's so cute!!

So I feel like with one of these creepypasta-type ARG games, one of the biggest factors in if it lands is art design and sound design. This game NAILS that stuff! The aesthetic and UI design is so delightful and the color pallette is great. Barry's soft gravely voice makes me so extremely happy - I think it's because usually these horror mascot creatures have scary or shrill voices, and barry having such a soft sweet voice is just the best.

The sentence-completing segment was really fun in how it transitioned into horror and I'm VERY excited to see what other horror minigames lie beyond the schoolhouse. I think I got most excited, though, when I reached the simulated operating system, i'm always a sucker for those! Seeing that makes me excited for the depth of different puzzles and story beats we could get in a full game.

The only notes I can really give off the top of my head are that the volume mixing felt a little off, and the lighting on the (REALLY REALLY NICE) settings menu made the shadows a bit too long. But that's small potatoes!

I am really curious to see how this will look expanded into a full game. In a longer game, part of me wonders if Barry should start out a little subtler, so we kind of build into the big scary jumpscares and text, or if the big scary jumpscares and text mean that in a full game, the horror will be escalated even more than that. If Barry is THIS SCARY at the beginning of the game, I feel like towards the end there's gonna be a segment where he, like, jumps out of the screen and chases you around. How far are we going, you know? What are we building towards? These questions excite me LOL

I DESPERATELY need a plush of barry he's so extremely cute. i don't even CARE that he is of the devil! I played the game here on stream at 1:56:05

Thank you so much for the positive comments! Yes--you're right, I wanted to cook up some creepypasta and meatballs hehe. There will definitely be more "hacking" mini games in the future, and I've planned for the other locations to have some unusual game mechanics too.

And I agree, I need to work on the volume mixing. Believe it or not it used to be much, much worse lol. I'll get working on that soon!

As for the pacing: I originally planned for the story to get very, very creepy later on, but you do raise an interesting point. I don't want to spoil anything though

But overall, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and if I had plushy lil' barry buddy, you would get one for free!

Overall, I enjoyed playing this game.  The art and sound reminded me of old PBS shows on a CRT, which was a nice touch.  The music was good as well.

As I put the sentences together, the dread of where the story would go built up nicely, and the twist in the last sentence was not what I expected at all.  I also loved how the distortion at the bottom of the screen slowly crept up once I realized it was doing it.

I didn't experience any bugs while playing.  The sentence building did feel a bit slow, though.  It might be better to maybe have two sentences per screen to add the missing word two, just so it doesn't feel like it's taking too long to get to the meat of the game.

Also, the phrases the caterpillar-looking creature got repetitive; it would be nice if it had unique ones as the story continues.  I do appreciate that they also show the text of what he says in case I missed it and for my viewers who might struggle with making out some words.

The monster at the end was delightfully cursed-looking, and the ending left me curious as to where it would all go.

Hi Collectonian!

Sorry for the late reply...I've been very busy with work lately, but I do appreciate you taking the time to write feedback for the game. I'm glad that the build up of the dread worked, but you're right that the sentence building is a bit slow. To solve this, in a future build I might change the drag and drop functionality so that it is click to fill in the blank to make it go faster. As for the repetition of Barry's voice lines, I think I might make it so that he offers a response every other answer. Thanks again for playing!

Sincerely,

  • Youtube Link / Twitch Link
  • Graphics : Fine?
  • GUI : Fine , I like that the settings menu is thematic.
  • Performance : Fine
  • Music / Sfx :
    • Music : Main menu music is exceedingly loud.
    • SFX : Fine
  • Gameplay :  A bit unsure as the demo is rather short, there's an edutainment bit and an ARG / DOS bit , I'd assume the game will go for a combination of the two going forward.
  • Misc Issues :
    • You can keep doing the word guess after 'failing'
  • Notes :
    • MORTIS
    • It'd be nice if you could just click the word rather than click and drag, especially with how long it goes on for.
    • It's a bit fiddly to get the word into the blank spot sometimes.
    • It gets a bit loud right before and during the word guess ending , rather it didn't.
    • Unsure if the voice direction is meant to be kind of grating , but it can be rather dificult to hear and understand as well.
    • Repeated lines in the word guess are frequent and can be a bit annoying, making a voice line every 3 or so could be good instead of every one.
  • Final Thoughts : It's a bit hard to get an idea of how this will be in it's final state , as it is it's a bit annoying with the constant voice lines and the click n' drag word guessing, the ARG command line was a bit more enjoyable.

Hi Zflocco,

I just read on the discord that loud audio and jumpscares are not your thing, so apologies for not notifying you in advance of that. A big thank you for still taking time to play and give feedback for my game.

Much of your critiques are valid. I have some fixes in the latest version that address some of them. Including:

  • The audio is much more balanced now (i.e. main menu music is no longer extremely loud)
  • The audio settings give more control over the sound levels
  • Words cannot still be submitted after "losing" the word game
  • The gameplay includes a bit more content

You are the second person to mention that the "drag n drop" mechanic was a bit cumbersome, so I will aim to replace it with clicking to fill in the blank. I will also make Barry not repeat lines that have already been delivered.

You seem very busy, so it is understandable if you do not have time to reply, but thanks again!
