Really solid entry! I didn't run into any bugs and I had a lot of fun figuring out the momentum and then weaving between enemy ships and barrels. Great work!

Thank you for playing!

Congrats on your first GWJ participation, very cool game

Only small complaint is very slippery control

Developer

Thank you! I had a lot of fun, I’ll definitely be participating in another one in the near future.

The slippery controls are intentional. You’re captaining a ship, after all, which should take a little finesse. Although a balance between that and responsiveness is definitely necessary. Do you believe it’s too slippery such that it makes it impossible to control, even with a little practice?

Such a cool concept, nicely implemented! It took me a while to understand the barrels heal you and are not just more debrie.

Visually the wave gets a bit heavy on the eyes - could be more subtle

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! That’s interesting, I was hoping the matching icons on the barrel and health bar would make it obvious enough. Any suggestions on how I could make it blatant?

And yes, I agree the wave is a bit much but I’ll work on making it subtler after the jam is over! Thanks again!

One way would maybe be a red shine behind the barells. Or "healing particles" like small + oder hearts ...

I was to hectic to match the obvious icon match xD

The ship movement is smooth, is there some end goal? I could not reach very far kept dying to the shooting ships. I agree with other comments that the wave animation is maybe a bit disorienting, maybe it needs a bit less contrast or something. Cool game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! No real end goal, other than to survive, as most endless runners go. Although I dabbled with the idea of a shop for ship upgrades, much like how you have in your game between waves! More health, faster speeds, maybe a cannon to shoot back, etc. Time did not permit it within the game jam, unfortunately.

Less contrast is a great idea, it would probably help to blur the lines. I’m a programmer by passion, trying to improve my art skills! Thank you for the suggestion.

Yeah time can be tough in these jams, but with practice we can make more in shorter time!

Developer

EXACTLY! I’ve already seen myself improving since my last game jam game, High Score Hunters (shameless plug lol). But progress certainly isn’t linear. Hope you take a moment to look back and be proud of your own work too!

Yeah sure, keep building tools you can reuse in your games then it will be super fast, and art is a lot about shapes and colors, so even with good shapes and colors you can create something appealing!

The colors and animation of the waves were a little dizzying., but the movement of the ship was really satisfying, nice work!

Developer(+1)

Yes, I regret the animation is pretty choppy. Perhaps a few more frames would smooth it out and make it a little less disorienting. Thanks for the feedback!

Good job on making a solid game, even more with pirates
