There's some cool art here, and I could definitely see turning this into a more full game.

For a proof of concept, this is quite polished. The combat felt nice, the graphics are great, and I loved how the screen transitions change depending on the direction you're going. Good job!

The sprite work, animation, and title screen art is great here. The directional transitions are a nice touch. Good job getting anything submitted. Jams are hard!

Other than what you already listed that you want to add, you may want to make some of the rooms more distinctive, or maybe add a map. I had to triple check that the room layout wasn't randomized.

Developer

I definitely do want to add a map! The rooms are definitely randomized though, theres 34 different rooms you can get but with them all the same size and the same tiles for the floor just moved around it definitely does start to look like the same room over and over.

It feels like it might need a few more things, but what is there is polished! Movement feels good, hitting enemies has an impact and coin drops are satisfying! As a proof of concept it's great and I wish you all the best if you plan on working on it!

Thanks! it definitely needs a LOT more! If you go to the bottom comment I listed a few things I want to add!

Despite the scope issue, the game was actually still quite fun, the attack and the movement felt pretty nice in general. good job

Great art and simple intuitive controls. Very cohesive visuals, other than the score counter being in the wrong place :P

one of the many last minute bugs I couldn’t fix 🫣 hahaha thank you!

Second game of the jam I've taken a look at!

Right off the bat, you're a peg-legged pirate, on the look for Doubloons.. It's a straightforward interpretation of the theme but I am a big fan. It seemed you put a lot care into the title screen, as well as the main character sprite as I especially enjoyed those.

Other visual elements were simple, but very clear. I love the topdown perspective, with the walls all leaning outward, especially in this kind of game.

Now, the dev said the game was more a proof of concept as he suffered from overscope and yes, that's certainly true. There isn't much gameplay to speak of, you walk through room after room with the same enemy, defeating them and collecting the coins that drop.  So, after I got to about 100 coins, I decided to stop playing there.

Now don't get me wrong, the parts that are present are very solid. I'm a huge fan of these types of games and I could very clearly see that if you were afforded more time, this could have turned into something more and truly good.

As a proof of concept and for its potential, I very much liked The Cursed Doubloon and will be keeping an eye on possible updates.

I appreciate your response! I plan to add so much more! I want boss rooms, tons of enemies, different room sizes, puzzle rooms, an island/beach biome, a cave biome, different weapons and abilities… there’s so much I want to add. Definitely will keep working on this!
