Description
Music set to field recordings captured around South Fork Quantico Creek.
Workflow components of this project:
-Capture field recordings using Zoom H2E with front/rear mic enabled and 120° stereo coverage
-Composition and sound design: Create 2 sequences on MPC Key 37 G2 using AIR plugins/effects and samples of acoustic guitar and chimes captured on Shure SM57, export completed sequences
-Combine and arrange MPC sequences and field recordings in Ableton
-Create map of the Quantico Creek area in QGIS using USGS data (artwork)
Constraints/Composition:
I think I ended up with a "confused" A Lydian mode. 1st piece has A# in piano motif but the drone at the end of the 1st piece holds A. 2nd piece chord progression goes from Amaj7(#11 ) to Dmaj7 before going to chords like G#m7/F# or Emaj7. The drone at the end of the 2nd piece holds D#
AIR plugins/effects:
Mellotron, Fabric Piano, Fabric XL, Studio Strings, AIR Delay Pro

very nice take! I really like contemplative music and I loved the sound design you did, cool work!
Interesting piece. As others have said, the piano feels a bit detached from the background SFX and maybe too upfront, but when the bass and other synths come in everything starts to feel more cohesive. I specially liked the preparation for the guitar entrance, and the general mood you achieved. Nice job.
Ambient sounds are mixed well, not over the top but quite present. My ears want the piano to sound farther away, maybe have another reverb that is wetter. I learned that with multiple reverbs, you want them in parallel and not series for clarity, generally (I suppose unless you really knew what you were doing or were doing something extremely complex).
I like the bass synth that comes in around 1:15.
Solid work!
This is very good though I concur with the others about the river sfx. In the beginning it was perfect but as the track progressed it should have taken a backseat. The guitar is perfect which plugin did you use for it?
Thanks for comment! I recorded myself jamming over the progression with a Shure SM57 straight into the MPC where I was building my track. I used a basic ~$100 Yamaha acoustic guitar. I kept the bits I liked from the improv, added Air Delay Pro, and sent the guitar into the MPC's reverb and delay returns.
Very nice, the guitar is the cherry of the track it was a great idea, its well mixed, you could probably lower a tiny bit the river sound or just a quick low pass on it at some point to leave space for the music but its also not too bad I still like it the way it was, good job !

I think the nature sound fx are a little to present. The ambient work is very nice, but it's drowned out heavily by the river sfx in my opinion.
Thanks for comment. After I submitted I started feeling the river sound was too loud as well and now I can't unhear it lol. At least it's a minor tweak :)
Yeah it doesn't hurt the track at all, I hope you didn't take my comment that way. It's just something I wanted to point out in terms of feedback.
No you’re fine, I didn’t take it that way. I do appreciate the feedback!
Sounds very Natural, with a slightly mysterious, Ominous feel to it, yet still calming nonetheless. Pretty good job!
Really great listen. I loved the guitar entry in the middle. Felt like a real release, and the field recordings really give this a proper 'secret lake' vibe. Thanks for sharing.
this reminds me of breath of the wild or the hunter call of the wild ost, pretty cool but it lacks some sort of rythym part, i get it is ambient music but if it does not have that it just sound a little too redundant, and real recorded instruments would have been a really good addition.
overall really good and i really liked that you recorded the ambient sounds of the park
This is a great listen! The field recordings are beautiful and stich everything together really nicely. Good self control with the piano and guitar licks too, they add a lot of personality but are well placed and not distracting.
I've been looking for a field gear upgrade, do you like your Zoom H2E? Sounds great but looks maybe a little awkward to hold?
Thanks! The H2E is my first mic for field recording and this project was my first time using it so I don't have a lot of experience to go off of. I settled on it because it seemed like it could handle both nature/environment recording as well as live performance. It's awkward to hold on its own but you can attach it to a stick if it's the right size.
All I’ve gotta say is
You quite possibly had the best idea out of all of us.
