Whispers From The Water:
The Lake Emerges
A Secret Shall Be Revealed
Water Then Recedes

Notes:
I've been really excited to take part in this jam. I've been lurking since the worldbuilding jam was in progress and have been floored with the quality music I've seen posted. I'm really hoping this is well received because I have huge respect for the community.

I took great care to incorporate authentic instruments and listened to a lot of Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei music to see how I could approach the theme. I wanted to give a personal touch so I attempted to use those methods and tools in my own voice.

These three tracks feature distinct approaches to achieving the theme and hopefully provide compelling storytelling without disrupting the ambience. I came up with the structure as a whole, titling each track as a line in a Haiku to mirror my interpretation of "The Secret Lake".

Track Details
If you have any questions on how I did anything feel free to ask!
All of these tracks are built with more or less the same template. This includes a few drone layers bussed together, a small string ensemble, Japanese VSTi, plus a few unique layers that give each track individuality. Each track also has a small and large reverb bus pulling together select instruments.

1. The Lake Emerges
I wanted to open with a string instrument that emulated guitar but in a timbre that would resonate with the theme. Using the Koto I found a limited scale that could work as Phrygian, so I began writing a riff that would be palatable and had some flair to capture the attention of a listener without being abrasive to the serene vibe from the painting.

Plug-Ins:
UAD Distressor, UAD Ampex ATR-102 Master Tape, Pro-Q 4, UAD LA-2, Session Strings Pro 2, UAD 1176 FET, UAD Helios Type 69 Preamp/EQ, Stradivari Violin, UAD Capitol Chambers, Supercharger GT, Soothe3, ValhallaVintageVerb, Spotlight Collection East Asia, Replica XT, Saturn 2, Solid Bus Comp, Choral, Decapitator, VoxD Widen, ReaComp, ReaGate, ReaLimit, Raum, Kinetic Metal, Spellsinger, Softube Doom Chvrch, UAD Oxide Tape Recorder

2. A Secret Shall Be Revealed
Before the jam had started, I began imagining a reverse sidechain where a percussion instrument could trigger the ADSR of a separate track; similar to how a rigid object's shape can be seen when pressed into a thin sheet. I knew I wanted to attempt something experimental with this jam and felt like I could get away with a light-handed technical trick somewhere in the middle of the submission. This track features a percussive element that shines in the latter half but ultimately is triggering the droning layers in the beginning as well! There is also a massive tempo shift with the track starting at 85bpm and linearly increasing to 200 and decreasing back to 85 by the end. This was to create a subtle sense of crescendo to those elements despite the droning layers holding a relative pace.

Plug-Ins:
Supercharger GT, Pro-Q 4, Soothe3, UAD LA-2, Spotlight Collection East Asia, UAD Captiol Chambers, ValhallaVintageVerb, UAD Helios Type 69 Preamp/EQ, Guitar Rig 6, Replica XT, Saturn 2, Solid Bus Comp, Choral, Decapitator, VoxD Widen, UAD Distressor, UAD Waterfall Rotary Speaker, ReaPitch, ReaLimit, Raum, Ashlight, Kinetic Metal, UAD 1176 FET

3. Water Then Recedes

If the first track is an attempt to be outwardly flashy through writing and the second as a technical ambient experiment, the third and final seemed fitting to be something made for myself. The goal was to have a track that felt like it was descending (or 'receding'). To do this I used unique droning tracks that emulated the sound of water with a digital essence and high pitch ringing/subby oscillating bowed cymbals. The initial melodic voice is the solo violin which is followed with droning Japanese flutes crashing in pitch, a plucky Shamisen with glitch2 adding a degradation, as well as the original Koto sound sampled and pitched to equal temperament in order to continue the original Phrygian idea presented.

Plug-Ins:
Una Corda, Pro-Q 4, Saturn 2, UAD Distressor, UAD Ampex ATR-102 Master Tape, UAD LA-2, Session Strings Pro 2, UAD 1176 FET, UAD Helios Type 69 Preamp/EQ, ReaPitch, Decapitator, Stradivari Violin, Supercharger GT, Soothe3, VallhallaVintageVerb, ReplicaXT, Solid Bus Comp, Choral, Guitar Rig 6, Parallax X, VoxD Widen, Battery 4 (to tune Koto), UAD Studer A800 Tape Recorder, ReaDelay, UAD Capitol Chambers, Spotlight Collection East Asia, Glitch2, ReaComp, UAD Ampex ATR-102 Master Tape, RC 48, Ghz Lossy 3, UAD Oxide Tape Recorder, Kontakt Synths: Artic Morning, Kinetic Metal, Raum

Mastering Plug-Ins:
Pro-Q 4, ReaXcomp, Ozone 10, Loudness Meter Peak/RMS/LUFS

The duet nature of the two Koto in the beginning was a nice touch and blended quite well into the main part of „The Lake Emerges“.

The compositions and the mixing are done quite solidly and create that eery dark ambiance.

However I feel there are two places where I could see some potential improvement Keep in mind these points are more personal notes for where I would see room for further improvement that are not necessarily part of the rating itself, since they are mostly edging into personal taste and overanalyzes that would be very much beyond any hobby scope for a 2 week jam.

First would be the cohesion of the mix. With every instrument feeling clean but not really part of one unit as the mix and feeling a bit isolated.

My recommendation would be here to not shy away from adding more schmutz into different stages, that act as a tight compressor and also to create some harmonic overtones that blend everything more into each other. Making it feel more dens.

Secondly, would the high end contend in the general composition. In a way it ties into the aforementioned part, but also can be seen as a different point. While listening to the songs multiple times, it felt like there some free space within the spectral space, where the instruments and the mix could have had more breathing room. While there are ambient noises and elements all over the songs, they are more sitting in the area around ±7kHz and beyond. The instruments itself though feel like they could either use some extra kick in around ±4klHz+ to give them a bit more sheen and sparkle or it would have been nice to have another element in there that would have filled out that space a bit more. Like giving the reverb a bit more breathing room with there to give it a bit more presence back in the tails or adding another synth like element that would be subtly adding to the atmosphere.

The use of the reverb itself is done very well with being clean, not overly noticeable and but still there to create the ambient feeling. Personally I would have gone for a bit less subdued sound, see reason mentioned before, but that would be rather a personal taste.

Generally though I have to congratulate the work your’ve done here. The mixing is on the higher end and what you’ll find in most Jams here and the compositions itself feel more than adequate for the given theme and scope.

So, very well done.

*The four out of five is mostly due to comparative reasons, since there are submissions that are strikingly exceptional in this regard. Otherwise I would have given the full points here.

Hey Einel, I’ve been a huge fan of your music in the server and I’m very glad you took the time to share your insight! I’ll definitely consider those points in the future. I feel blessed that out of all the decisions made it’s just those two simple fixes that stood out for improvement. I definitely get what you mean with the comparative element as well, there’s been some fantastic work presented in this jam!

Really solid submission all around.

Hello, David Mehrer! Here I go with my review for your entry.

I listened to the YouTube version of your entry with closed-back headphones.

Track by track review:

1. The Lake Emerges

I am feeling the alternate panning a bit extreme at the beginning in headphones. At 1:20 great melodic transition and entering of the flutes. Very contemplative mood. The sampled muted Koto might feel a tad repetitive sounding at some points, but I am just nit-picking. Great touch with the vocal sample at 2:20.

2. A Secret Shall Be Revealed

Great mysterious mood with the overblown flute and string attacks. Excellent usage of tension and dynamics. Feeling the empty space, the dampness. Percussion at 4:00 maybe lacks a bit of punch? Just nit-picking again, anyways. Very cool sound design of strings with metallic tinkling tinges.

3. Water Then Recedes

Far away Middle-Eastern vibes. Descending glissando fantastically beautiful. So so good stuff from the 6:00 minute mark onwards. Rumbling delayed hit at the end working great to close the track and punctuate the fade out.

General impressions:

Amazing work! Nothing much more to say, mate. The amount of care and detail you put here is obvious and it results in a superimmersing, beautifully balanced and creative album. Great job perfectly consistent with the theme and the ambient requirements.

Ratings by category:

Execution: 5/5

Top-notch quality all around.

Vibe: 5/5

Very interesting, very moving and unique.

Composition: 5/5

Excellent work.

Listenability: 5/5

I save the five stars for those entries which I save to listen again later, and that's the case here. I need to check out that cool tempo changes and reverse side-chain you mention at some point!

Correlation to Theme: 5/5

Perfect correlation to both prompt and image.

Thanks for taking the time to put together such a thorough analysis. I’m so glad you enjoyed the tracks and I’ll definitely check out the rubric. I appreciate the kind words, it really means a lot to me!

Excellent work, one of the best I've heard in this jam so far. It sounds really profesional.

I’m pretty blown away by your first track. The conversation you’re having between these instruments is study worthy, very engaging done with impecable mixing. Loving the panning to distinguish the various characters here. This is my favorite track from the jam so far.

Middle track I also liked but is my least favorite of the three. The first and last are just so strong.

Track three, I’m really loving the way you’re moving us between layers and pitches, really scratching something in my brain with this one.

Really wish I could give you some more useful critical feedback for you to use but your entry is really nailing my dopamine receptors sorry lol.

Developer

Wow! Thank you so much for the high praises! I also think the middle track was the weakest of the three but I also wasn’t sure if the first and last would be considered too busy for an ambient jam so it was hedging against that situation, plus it was by far the most experimental so getting it to where it’s at was a lot of uncharted territory for me. I love to hear the positive feedback and I really appreciate the shoutout on discord!

Submitted(+1)

Yeah the genre is super loosely defined so I get the concern, but I would personally consider all 3 as fitting into ambient as well as other categories. I don’t think you’re gonna get knocked down on theme/ambientness.

Glad to give you the shoutout, it’s great work!

This is a really ambitious, well-crafted set of tracks. The Koto work, the experimentation with reverse sidechain, and the tempo shift in track two show a level of consideration and vision that stands out. The storytelling across the three tracks is genuinely clear!

Amazing work; can't wait to hear more from you!

Submitted(+1)

Great stuff, lots of very cool variation, you had the theme right on the target and made something really cool, lots of work being put on. Last track reminds me a little bit of the Silo Soundtrack, maybe its the strings swells bending upwards and the general vibe. Two things and I'll give you that.  First, I did not give up yet but almost, playing with MIDI in Reaper, I have a hard time doing it I don,t know how you managed to setup a good workflow. Second thing, I don't know how you can play with Session Strings, I tried and don't like the sound at all XD but it is my taste, nothing to do with your composition of course. Super nice arrangement good job !

Developer

I’m super excited you checked out my music, I absolutely loved your track and was super curious what you think. For the MIDI in reaper I find blending playing on a midi controller and programming by hand gets me the best results but a I’ve also used reaper since I was a kid so maybe I don’t remember any other way. I’m not in love with session strings either, I’d like to upgrade into a Spitfire or Berlin library at some point. I find the best way to use Session strings is only use the most close/dry settings and build my own reverb. Plus the Strad is a little easier on the ears and can be blended in pretty heavily. Thanks so much for the kind words, it means a ton to me!

Submitted(+1)

If you're going to buy new strings, go with either Cinematic Studio Series or Berlin, they are both very similar and have almost the same kind of options and to me sounds as close as the real thing when played right with the appropriate parameters.

Hey David! This was a fantastic listen! What awesome work and effort you put into it. I can really hear it. I liked every aspect of these songs, from their style, the ambient, the instrument choices. Goodness! Way more than I put into mine, which I wish I had had more time to play with. Anyway, you hit the theme right on. I liked the panning, the effects, the drones. They all fit really well. The Japanese, or eastern style was very welcomed! That also fit well. Oh, your polishing was good and it was clean. I need to invest into some better instruments lol. What a solid submission and what a great listen!

Submitted(+1)

Oh wow, this is incredible work. In regards to your comment on mine, I think you did extremely well considering the challenges! I particularly love your haiku and Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei inspirations. I also really enjoyed your use of the traditional Japanese instruments, something that I just couldn't have gone without in regards to this artwork/theme. It's very cool to see your intention behind each track and plugins involved. When I have time I will watch the full creation video. Thank you for sharing your work!

Submitted(+1)

Amazing work - I'm floored by the technical detail you've put into making these tracks - it's inspiring. I particularly liked the percussion towards the end of 'A Secret Shall Be Revealed' and the subtlety of the groove in 'Water Then Recedes'.

Developer

Thank you so much! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the music, the percussion on the second track was super experimental for me so it’s awesome to hear that was a highlight.

Submitted(+1)

Congrats! What a beautiful journey through your submission, genuinely moving and emotional. You've done a magnificent job. The sound selection is fantastic, and that Asian-inspired vibe suits it so well!! Brilliant work!!

Submitted(+1)

I love this especially the Japanese vibe! I had also considered trying for that vibe however I didn't have the VSTs for it so I went with a different approach. I also like how you mentioned all the plugins you used.

Submitted(+1)

I like how this all sounds! It sounds like Dark Ambience, which I really like. I'm also interested in noticing you used The Spellsinger DecentSampler Library in one song... I used that same Library in one of my own songs LOL. Very well done! I like how it all sounded.

Developer

Thanks for the positivity! Always good to meet a fellow Spellsinger appreciator. I had to layer a little bit of my own voice to make it fit just right but those samples are super legit.

Submitted(+1)

Cool! I've sampled my own voice & made it into a Tone Patch before, but I don't use those Tone Patchs much, to be honest. I've been looking into a Free Alternative to the Kontakt Voices Of The Rapture Library, and when I found The Spellsinger a few months back, I knew that it was probably the best Free Solo Vocals Library that I could probably get! Also, you're welcome for the Positivity!

Hi David,

I checked out your tracks and thoroughly enjoyed them, here's some feedback and thoughts, hope it helps!

Things I liked:

- Use of panning was great.
- Took advantage of accurate rhythms and scales for koto.
- Overblown Shakuhachi used for great effect in atmosphere building
- Nice use of rubato in the third piece - the violin really added a lot and was probably my favorite instrument in this mix.  Definitely needed more screentime! (oh I just read the description, of course it's a Strad =) nice!)
- Third piece really reminded me of Far Cry Instincts Predator Soundtrack: Lightning on the Sun (Menu Theme) - you might want to check it out if you want more inspiration for this kind of stuff.
- Using high quality VSTs, and also listing the instruments you used, awesome and always appreciated!

Things to consider for next time:

- Echo / Delay with koto at certain points might add to the atmosphere.
- Ending is sometimes a bit abrupt like in the first piece, maybe a fade would be better.
- Second piece took a while to buildup... maybe there was a way to build it up a bit faster.
- Sometimes drums in the second piece didn't sound like they were in the same (reverb) space as the other things, you may need to add a bit more reverb to drums to make them sit better with the mix.

Developer

Thanks for checking it out, I’m super happy to hear you enjoyed it! I’m a fan of Far Cry so I’ll definitely check out that piece. I appreciate you taking the time to provide such solid feedback and I’ll definitely consider those points for next time.
