I commenced this humble enterprise a man of modest aspiration, desiring naught but the preparation of a simple omelet. Yet Providence, in its inscrutable wisdom, had ordained a loftier destiny. There appeared before me a squirrel, diminutive in stature yet imperious in bearing, whose hunger I was solemnly charged to assuage.
With the ardor of the untested, I consigned ingredient after ingredient to the frying pan, and behold, my efforts yielded nothing resembling an omelet. Despair descended upon me like an autumnal fog. I questioned my competence, my station, the very sufficiency of my soul. What manner of cook fails an omelet in the presence of so discerning a patron?
But lo, in the depths of my desolation, I gazed anew upon the pan and perceived that I had not failed at all. I had, through some alchemy of fate and fortuitous error, conjured a risotto. The squirrel regarded me with what I can only describe as grudging esteem.
I emerged from that kitchen transfigured. I had sought an omelet and found myself. I never knew of what I was capable.
