Hey Alyctro! You have created a very rich song here! Good work. I really like the Japanese style instruments and traditional music you used here. They really add a lot of depth to the track. Plus this song has so many layers! Goodness. I can hear so many different things. Really solid job here. I enjoyed listening to it.

Great piece that matches the theme well!

A great piece, good work :)

Thank you very much, it could have been better.

It always can be better ;)

The overall instruments and piece sounded nice, however, you directly and very obviously quoted at least one Japanese folk song, Sakura Sakura. Is it not possible to come up with something more original? The jam's rules were to "Submit only original content". My advice would be to look into some ways you can incorporate more originality in your piece - direct quotes are almost never the way to go, especially in a composition contest like this.

Developer

I was not aware of that, it was just sitting in my head for years. And we had to use anything other than chromatic scales. Also, it's not the exact melody as my notes are a little bit different now that i checked. Your advice is greatly appreciated but how do i look for something if i don't know what i'm looking for?

I'm not sure what you mean - you're not looking for anything - but if you do decide to be inspired by classical piece that's 100% okay, but there is a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism - and this crosses that line for me.

Even if a few notes are different, the sonic identity and imprint is still there. You need to add enough variation in the (rhythms, notes, etc.) to have it not resemble the original melody so much.

As for memory, that's your responsibility to double check if you think something sounds familiar. I mean at some point you had to have heard the song before and it left on an impression on you right?

I'm not trying to be harsh but I'm trying to be realistic. If you were working the industry if you did something like this and it was another song perhaps, you would be indicted for plagiarism and potentially sued, and the consequences would be far greater and harsher than what would happen here in a game jam. This is a lesson that is best learned now rather than later.

What i meant was, it is very hard for me to know if a melody was used elsewhere, without me knowing the song. And i don't know how to check if it has already been used. Yes i've heard the melody somewhere, but it's like finding a needle in a haystack. If i made classical music and you told me it's Mozart or something, i couldn't have known. And don't worry i'm not angry.

I did find out a bit more about this phenomenon, its actually called Cryptomnesia (It is a memory bias whereby a person may falsely recall generating a thought, an idea, a tune, a name, or a joke; they are not deliberately engaging in plagiarism, but are experiencing a memory as if it were a new inspiration.), you can read about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptomnesia

And I wasn't joking about the legal stuff, musicians like George Harrison faced legal consequences for subconscious copying, as seen in the "My Sweet Lord" copyright case and had to pay $1,599,987.

I mean in the case of classical music since it is in the public domain you can use it - but it is definitely good practice to credit the composers. What seems to be the issue here is that you used a piece of music in the public domain and passed it on as if it were your original work without crediting the piece or the original composer.

Probably the best way is before you release the work, if you are unsure, you can try asking the community if they can name if the melody of your song appears somewhere else.

I think there are also apps like midomi etc. that let you hum the melody first to check.

Great stuff here. If feels from the beginning like a coastal village bustling with life. The drones chosen are great and everything feels very organic. The arrangement reminded me of Diablo II soundtrack at points. The mix is great with a great surround feeling, and mostly everything feels fresh and natural. Loving the melodic ideas you used, which stayed interesting enough to feel enriching but not intrusive. And you said you did this in less than 2 hours?!!! That's impressive, man. One of the richest and liveliest while also genuinely ambient tracks I listened to until now. The instrumentation is also fantastic. From the 5 minute mark, there's a weaker section with a motif which might end up feeling a bit repetitive, but then it changes to the outro and recovers its naturality. Excellent work very fitting to the theme as well.

Thank you so much for your insightful review. Yes, i knew about the jam but i got stuck in the hospital for two weeks. The night i was released, i rushed home to quickly create a project. It took a lot time to render, nearly making me miss the countdown by 10 seconds. I was in full panic mode. I looked into 80's japanese environmental music. I was also trying to play into this atmosphere as you said. Meaning, i didn't want the song to be too busy but boring either. I mostly stuck to sound cues you would hear, while paddling a boat through a village going silent at night. Passers by, water sloshing against the boat, music from the brothels, birds and insects, wind.

Forgot my edit that was for another jam  page , got mixed up. Real comment now XD : Fantastic textures, mix sound amazing too, really nailed the theme for me, really enjoyed this one, good job !

Wow thank you so much! Yours is very similar to mine, but much better.

This was a very pleasant journey. Only criticism I can offer is I don’t love the synth keys sound in here, just stylistically they don’t feel like they quite fit as well with the rest of the instrumentation genre/vibe wise. I feel like you could find something that fits a little better given more time. not a huge point of criticism but noticeable. Overall though very cohesive and great atmosphere!

Developer

I really didn't know how else to pad out the sound without making it too chaotic. Thanks for your input!

An absolute beauty of an atmospheric track! It immediately transports you right in the middle of a lake. Great work!!

My mind jumped straight to environmental music. Like those long documentary videos panning through nature with both music and sound effects. Or just plain asmr.

This is rich, with a lot of variety in its sounds and SFX. The Japanese-inspired approach gives it a distinct identity, and you've got a nice, structured composition.

Definitely replayable—you should put this on a streaming site!

I also wanted to add people murmuring in the background. Like a small village going to sleep. I only had about 2 hours to make this soundtrack. If i had started much sooner, this would have been far greater. But it was thrown together hastily. Thank you for your review.
