What kind of bad?

there’s been a lot of “bad” games over the years, and me and friends have been discussing what “bad” actually means.

for example, Pathologic is considered to be a good game, despite being awful to play, thanks to using its ‘bad design’ to tell a story. meanwhile, Wizardry 4 has unapologetically bad game design all around, with no point to it. there are also games like Cruelty Squad, a well designed and usually fun game, with a deliberately awful aesthetic, or like Getting Over It, where the game and its messaging is built around the clunky controls. another example are Mario Maker troll levels, the best of which are well designed levels that intentionally employ bad game design for humor.

all these games can be considered bad, but notably, some are bad with little redemption, and some are “bad” but enjoyable to play. I suppose I’m asking if a submission should be “fun bad”, or “misery bad”? if the former, what does the “Worst Overall” criteria mean? if the latter, how awful does the game’s design have to be until it’s hard to rank?

I have the same question.

The Jam's description makes me think that "misery bad" would be the way to go, but I'm still unsure. I think a game that is conventionally "bad" but still manages to be fun is harder to make, and thus encourages participants to actually make an effort rather than just spewing random things and calling it a day.

But yet again, that might not be the goal of this Jam and the host really wants shovelware kind of games. Either way, I'm ready to participate!

When the theme comes out, it should help in the direction to take. What I can say is that the creator should know how often certain aspects occur. For example, if I were to make a completely "misery bad" game that's essentially unplayable and a blank screen that does nothing but glitches, it detaches from the "game" aspect and moves more toward the boring aspect. However, the same applies if "fun bad" is stretched so far that it becomes too fun and voters don't see the intentional bad aspects.

Essentially, you have to find a middle ground. A game can be bad, but the intention to make it bad is clear. But it is still also beginner-friendly, so we definitely don't expect the most complex "worse" game you can think of.

We want to see how someone can effectively take so many "worse" elements that it becomes playable.

Good luck on the rest< 3
