This is definitely in my top ten favorites. I liked the story and I absolutely loved the gameplay. I felt like it was challenging without being unfair, and the checkpoint system is extremely forgiving. I always love games that have a crafting mechanic, though I do think there needs to be a prompt for when the player does craft something. I lost many a match or candle by accidentally clicking something, thinking it'd give me a description first. And I like that you combined stealth and resource management in a way that was incredibly fun and still (slightly) nerve-wracking too.
I really liked the enemy AI and how it really forces a player to engage with the stealth mechanics this game is pushing us toward. Managing sanity OR visibility can be a lot for a player, and having to do BOTH at the same time was a challenge I was up for! I think my only problem was that sometimes it wasn't always clear when an enemy was right around a corner, and I did get ambushed quite a few times.
I agree with Noah that the only unforgiving part was that the inventory/crafting menu didn't pause the game. When I had a source of light, it was okay. But in really tight spots, it was difficult to have to open the menu to craft something I needed (I once ran out of candles and didn't realize it) and then move quickly because I realized the game was still going.
With all of this being said, this was amazing for a game jam entry and it's clear a lot of love went into this. The aesthetics reminded me of the SNES games I loved playing, and the music and ambience were top notch for a horror game. I really liked the story you had here, and the main character reminded me a LOT of Bakura from Yu-Gi-Oh. Definitely can't wait for a full release.
This game rocks! The mixed aesthetics of black and white anime girl and coloured pixel art was kind of jarring at first, but really grew on me and I think its very visually distinct. I think if you create just a little more opportunities to display specifically the black and white anime style in game, you're going to have a really unique and eye catching art style.
The progression and steady introduction of new mechanics (there were WAY more than I initially thought there would be) was perfectly paced in my opinion, and the enemy encounters (particularly the first one) were great gameplay wise - really fun to have to manage the visibility, sanity, health and distraction systems all at once. This kind of gameplay serves the horror genre SO well.
The story didn't engage me too much, however I did really like the whole Jeckel and Mr Hyde narrative dynamic. The way this also eventually transitioned into gameplay was also awesome. The level design and puzzles were really good too.
The crafting system was really interesting, although I do think you need to add a little more feedback for when the player actually crafts something. Even just the "craft" button changing colour or briefly flashing when you press it would make it clearer when you've crafted something.
My biggest piece of feedback would be to maybe make the crafting menu pause the game when you open it. I get what you were going for in keeping the tension by not having the game pause when the player opens their inventory, but I feel like it might be a little too harsh, especially as it forces the player to make decisions a little too quickly as well as not appreciate how impressive and interesting the crafting and inventory menus actually are.
Overall this game is really fun and has a lot of potential, keen to stay updated on future development and updates!
Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback i really apreacite it !
This was...super cool.I honestly wish for a full release! Reminds me of my favorite RPG Maker games but has that modern approach to it when it comes to game mechanics and overall presentation. The crafting was super unexpected and introduced early on in a nice way..super impressed and looking forward for more~!
thank you so much for the review!!
Wow, this is a really well-made game! I honestly didn’t expect there to be so many cool mechanics and interesting ideas packed in it. I enjoyed the art style, especially the dialogue boxes and main menu, and the sound design was nicely done to. The inventory and crafting systems were particularly well-made and felt really polished. I also really enjoyed the story. The mystery had me interested and wanting to find out what was going on. And I definitely wasn’t expecting jump scares - the rat kinda got me :)
Overall, really nice game!
Thank you! im glad you like it!
