The game only supports X-input devices. Playstation and older generic controllers won't work.
If you have an X-input controller, make sure it is connected before starting the game; Unity engine sometimes fails to detect newly added controllers while the game is running. If you want to rebind your controller inputs, you can run the game through Steam as a non-steam game and customize your controller layout through Steam's in-game overlay.
