This is the read I was hoping for, and the 72/85 mismatch is exact. The window opens at 72 percent but the ring only shows at 85, and because the fall eases out, by 72 the bubble has already covered most of the drop and looks like it is just floating there, so nothing on screen says "now". I will make the bubble itself change at 72 (tail goes amber) instead of adding another hint line. Your second point is the one I have been avoiding: I hid the stake behind a fail card that only slow players ever see, and you are right that letting one landing happen on purpose makes the hearts mean something.
