How many people have a controller hooked up to their PC?

The more features I add to my game the more complex it becomes to control with mouse and keyboard. However, it lends itself marvellously to a controller layout. If I decide to go purely controller input, will anyone play my game? Do _you_ have a controller hooked up to your PC?

I own a good controller and used it happily back when I was still making and playing games. But it’s always been kind of a hassle, too.

It's fine (although indeed a bit of a hassle), my only suggestion is to clearly specify it on the page of the game and/or when launching the game because it's not that common and not that long ago I launched a game which didn't and felt stupid after I started to mash all the buttons on my keyboard before coming to the conclusion that I had to plug a controller (I did and at least it was worth it as the game is great).  ;)

I have yet to encounter a game that can be played with a controller, but not with mouse and keyboard.

A keyboard has like 10 times the buttons as a controller and if you give remapping ability, users will configure the game. You do not need to create the perfect control layout that fits everyone.

About the only feature a controller has, that a keyboard lacks is the analog triggers and sticks. And only if you need an accurate analog input, you will have trouble on a keyboard. Maybe throttle in vehicle games. And for something like a twin stick shooter, you have to utilize the mouse for directions.

Maybe look on /games/tag-twin-stick-shooter how those games deal with the keybord.

Personally, gamepad functionality is a must in all my games. You can use Xpadder to add keyboard buttons to the pad and see how it goes.

My 360 controller is hooked up to my PC.  I need it to test game controller support for my games.  Unfortunately, due to the weird nature of my setup, I can only test it on one browser, but at least (then) I will know if game controller support works or not.

I will have to support keyboard and mouse, keybinds are a good idea, maybe the players will come up with a sensible layout that I didn't think of. Thanks all!

I have an Xbox series X controller that I use for testing games.  I think it is essential to have both.  I also think customizable controls are a good idea.
