Allow filtering out tags / filter porn games without blocking all mature content

A lot of people aren’t interested in porn games, but the setting to hide all “adult” content is not very helpful because it includes any game that is marked as adult for any other reason such as realistic depictions of violence or difficult themes like mental illness. It would be nice to not have to lump it all together.

There are browser scripts that add the ability to filter tags and it solves the problem really well because humans are good at organizing stuff like this. But simply having two categories of adult games, porn and not, would be really helpful too.

Steam has had the same problem ever since porn games were first allowed. This would help make itch more of a place where creatively risky stuff can be given oxygen while also being a safe place.

Sensitive content / mature content is self identified by the developer. You will have a massive accuracy problem for any filters here.

Itch's nsfw category is culture centric to the United States. That means nude female pixel nipples are nsfw, but gore, horror and slasher games usually are not. Not mandatory, at least.

I am not sure if Steam has a problem here. They have additional maturity settings. Like for the gore, and for mature topics.

In practice, almost nobody is marking their games as adult for anything other than nudity or porn. Depictions of non-sexual violence and mental illness are simply not marked at all, and sexual violence completely banned from the site.

I agree that Itch should add better content filters, but in practice you are not missing out on anything by turning off adult content.

You will find some threads in forum of devs that complain that they cannot turn off adult content for viewing, because they marked their game that has mature topics as having sensitive content.

So, devs do use this feature. But since there is less than 30k nsfw games overal compared to the 1.7 million other games, that number will be low in comparison, even if all those nsfw games would be the non nudity kind.
