Thanks, and the touchscreen guess is close. Two separate things were both making the keys look dead: inside itch the frame has no focus until you click the game once, and any stray touch on a touchscreen keeps dragging the flame toward the finger, which fights the keys. Build 1.4.0 is live: a first-run card says "click once, then arrows or wasd", keys now win over the pointer, and the fuel doesn't burn until your first input (it used to be sitting at 70% before you even clicked in). If it still fails on your laptop, tell me which key and what it does.
