I think It may be easier to have a small array of commands instead of a text box where you write stuff. It's more easy to deploy. You could have a small array of options with labels that gives the hint description of what the option does. Like point and click graphic adventures used to do, but smaller and better. For example, 4 possible action. That for when talking to characters.

If talking about how to move the MC through the world to walk from a room to the other, well, the classic 'doing click on doors' is intuitive enough. you can made the door glow a bit to and to indicate it's interactable and the hint appear in a corner. Same with interact with objects like keys or torches. Basically the most direct and simple (for the player) the better. Unless you were asking for something else and I just got confused. XD

I want the text field specifically, as it is much wider to choose from. But I don't know how to give hints yet.

Maybe with the help of some mini games

Well, It's a VN game right? As long as the dialogs are clear enough a normal player should more or less have an idea of what to do. Another thing you can try is for example: If another character said something relevant (that can be the hint for the player) you could play a small  distinct sound sample with a little visual effect. Something similar to Metro 2033's karma system.

Another thing could be a small pop up like Telltales 'The Walking dead'. ('X character will remember that'.)But saying thing's like 'Hope you payed attention to that.' or 'Did she meant X thing from Y.' Something like showing the player's though.

And my last idea/suggestion. A journal. Literally, pressing J or a book icon to access a small list of relevant clues, item's descriptions and etc.

Something like these? Sometimes there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

The command line comes as an add-on if the player is interested in the character and wants to play with her more. Karma has already been realized, if the player does not have enough of it, then he will not be able to execute many commands.
