Starstruck: a love story told in fifteen piano pieces

Hi, I’m Dave Greening. I write piano music, and Starstruck is the game I built around it.

It’s April 1957. You’ve come about a piano advertised for sale at a house on the hill. The pianist who lives there hasn’t left his house in twenty-seven years, and the piano isn’t really for sale. Something happened one night in 1930, and he has never stopped waiting for it to be undone.

How it plays

The whole game lives inside an old concert programme lying on a wooden desk. Each place you explore is a plate printed across its pages. The margins fill with someone’s pencil notes and doodles, and the pages turn as you go.

  • Explore the house: find the torn halves of his music, solve the puzzles he left behind (a padlock, a star chart, an old wireless, a calendar), and piece together what happened.
  • Play the music: whenever you bring him a piece, he plays it. Then you become the light: you move through a painted night sky catching the notes his music gives off while a comet falls into the world around you.
  • Play well: how much light you gather across the story decides how it ends.

What’s in it

  • Fifteen original piano pieces, each with its own world: a meadow under a ringed planet, a sea in the mist, a forest full of fireflies, and more.
  • A point-and-click story in three acts, with two endings.
  • Concert mode for replaying any piece you’ve unlocked, with harder difficulties, companions and charms.
  • It saves as you go, and you can carry your progress between browsers with a save code.

It’s a quiet, sad and hopeful little game about time, regret, and the things we don’t say. It plays best with the sound on, in a browser on a computer, or on a phone held sideways.

Thank you for playing. If it moves you, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Fifteen piano pieces telling a love story is such a lovely idea. First releases often go unseen because something keeps the right players from finding them, and those early days are when a game's momentum is decided.

Thank you so much! I can't say I've had many plays, but it was a bit of a passion project for me anyway

Passion projects deserve players! Right now it's a little fish in a very big sea, and the right players hardly ever find it. Rooting for Starstruck.
