[Free printable, 1–4 players] The Midnight Observatory — blind playtest of instructions and hints

Can you start this paper mystery without the designer explaining it? I'm looking for independent playtest reports, including partial attempts.

Name of System: The Midnight Observatory, a standalone English cooperative detective case. A lens has vanished from an observatory; inspect the evidence, solve five puzzles and make a final case decision. No other game is required.

Number of Players: 1–4; suggested age 12+.

Approximate Session Length: Not yet measured with independent players. Please record your actual time; stopping after the first puzzle is useful feedback too.

Testing Period: Now through 8 November 2026 for this feedback round.

What you need: Print the 8-page Player Pack in A4 or US Letter. Printing costs are yours. The separate Host Guide contains hints and solutions; keep it closed during a blind attempt unless you need help.

What we're testing:

• Is it clear how to start and which document to read first?

• What is the first instruction or evidence item that confuses you?

• If you use a hint, does it help without giving too much away?

Choose Download Now → “No thanks, just take me to the downloads” for the free ZIP. Optional donations are not required. Downloading needs no itch.io account.

How to contact / report: Reply in this thread with the first unclear step or one improvement. If known, add player count, actual minutes, and whether you finished or stopped. Please name an evidence number rather than posting solutions. Replies require an itch.io account. This is a voluntary, unpaid playtest.

Nice that you're testing "can people start without you" first. That's where most printable mysteries fall apart. One thing that's helped me with paper cases: put the first document to read and which pages are host-only in one bold line at the top of page 1, so a group that skims still starts in the right place. For hints, a nudge, then a pointer, then the answer for each puzzle usually works better than one solutions sheet, because people will peek at the whole sheet once they open it.

Thanks — that makes the first-page skim test concrete. In the current pack, players start with Evidence 01 and keep the separate Host Guide closed until help is needed. The guide already has three progressive hints per puzzle, one puzzle per page, with solutions after the hint pages; later hints can be covered with a sheet of paper.

The useful check is whether that separation is obvious before someone starts reading. Have you looked at this pack, or is this advice from your other paper cases? If you try the opening, the first place you hesitate is enough to report here — no solution needed. I’m recording your suggestion as design feedback, not a completed playtest.
