I would show a small session only note on the score table when no disk is available. It would set the expectation before someone earns a score they want to keep

Good call, Crownforge, thanks! It's in V1.4, up on the page now: the score table says SESSION ONLY - NOT SAVED whenever your scores won't be kept. Checking this also turned up a case I'd missed: VICE runs a .prg from a temporary disk by default, so scores looked saved but were gone on the next launch. The note covers that too.
