How does your game interpret and use the Theme / Halloween?
3:33 takes It Only Comes Out at Night literally, and then turns it on the player.
It’s October 31st, 2021 (Halloween night), and the same night keeps repeating. At 3:33 a woman knocks on your door, soaked from the rain, asking to come in. A note on your table, in your own handwriting, says: “Don’t open the door. No matter who it is.”
Your lantern is the core mechanic. With it lit, the house looks normal. Blow it out and you see the truth: claw marks on the door, a figure in the mirror, a fire that was never there. But the dark feeds a hunger that grows the longer you stay in it.
Each loop she insists harder, and you remember a little more. Halloween is when the dead come knocking.

Thanks for making this, the dark house with a lit lantern and a fireplace in the living room felt tense right away. I walked through the rooms, clicked a framed photo and got the hint that some things only show in the dark, then I blew the lantern out with a right click and relit it with Space, which made the house feel much darker and stranger. The clock moving past 3:33 while I explored kept me on edge. One thing that would help is a clearer early objective marker, because I did not find a memory or a door choice in my run, and I was not sure what I should do first.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for such a detailed comment! I’m really glad the lantern and the dark house worked for you. You’re right that the goal isn’t clear enough at the start, and I’ll work on that. A few tips if you want to try again:

  • Explore every room and click on things. Some of them are memories, and you can see the ones you’ve found with Tab.
  • Blow out the lantern! Many memories only reveal themselves in the dark, but don’t stay in the dark too long…
  • The night repeats. Each time it does, the house changes and new memories become available.
  • When someone knocks at 3:33, go to the door. What you remember changes what you can say, and how the night ends.

Thanks for the honest feedback, it really helps!

Oh man! This is amazingly atmospheric game. You managed to achieve a proper horror vibes with simple graphics and some sound. This is how you do it!

Really cool! I literally had shivers while playing your game. No monsters jumping out, just an old house a worried sister and a door you shouldn't open.

This is how you do minimalist games. Keep up the great work!

This made my day, thank you! “An old house, a worried sister and a door you shouldn’t open” is exactly the feeling I was going for. It’s my first horror game, so hearing that it gave you shivers means a lot. Thanks for playing!

This is pretty cool, especially the immersive sound effects. Mobile controls would be a great addition and full screen.

Developer

Thank you, and you’re right about fullscreen! It doesn’t scale properly yet. I’ve already fixed it, and the fix will be up after the jam. I put a lot of love into the sound, so I’m happy you noticed it. Mobile is harder, because the game needs mouse and keyboard for looking around and the lantern, but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for playing!
