I really enjoyed this one, but the browser performance was the biggest thing getting in the way. The loading screen message was helpful because it set expectations. During play, though, I regularly experienced a noticeable pause when a room started getting attacked or when I finished a repair, sometimes with the music slowing down too.
I also had occasional camera snaps while running around.
Those interruptions were especially frustrating with how quickly an attacked room loses health. I would definitely appreciate a downloadable Windows version to try, along with some attention to those transitions.
The actual gameplay loop worked really well for me. Checking the phone, identifying which room needed attention, clearing out the creatures, and repairing the servers kept me moving. Having a different repair puzzle in each room helped give each trip some variety.
Room A’s wiring was probably my favorite. Seeing the wire trail out as I dragged between the colored connections was a really satisfying detail. It made that interaction feel good to use.
My other main criticism was how the difficulty increased across the four shifts.
The wiring gained more connections, the memory puzzle gained longer sequences, and the computer gained more bugs to click. By the last shift, I was mostly spending longer doing the same actions while the pressure increased around me. I would have liked some changes to how the repairs worked as well. Branching wires or combining colors could make the wiring more involved, for example. For the memory puzzle, I would have enjoyed patterns that used more of the six lights. A lot of mine repeated the same few positions.
I liked the low-resolution, PS1/N64-era presentation. The red rooms and pixelated fog worked particularly well once an attack started, and the creatures fit that look.
My browser initially wasn’t giving me any audio, so after completing the game I got sound working and played again. That made a big difference. The sound effects gave me useful feedback, and the music did a good job of keeping the pace up while I ran between rooms. I appreciated how much easier it was to understand what was happening with the sound working.
And the IT take on “it only comes out at night” was a great touch. Working a night shift keeping servers alive while those creatures tear everything apart gave the theme a fun, specific identity.
