This is a relaxing game. maybe if the critters had an animation of flying away or something It would take it to the next level. I didnt see the countdown mechanic though

Yes When you destroy the maze you are making the path finding easier for the bats. and each shot costs a second. so the more you destroy their home the faster they get you!
