I think option ii will draw more people in, and retain the people you already have playing the game. Also, as someone currently working on an IF in like early early stages, I find branching, as much as it sucks to code, a good way to explore ideas and integrate those fun random thoughts that maybe don't make it into the main plot-line but still have some merit to yourself or to your audience.

Loved the demo! It's well written and I am excited regarding the variety of dateable personalities! I also love the intrigue behind each of the characters and the little hints to their backstories we are getting in the demo! My current theories regarding intertwined lives in the town involves pixies, the tooth fairy, and werewolves so we'll check back on that when it's fully released. Kael aka hot emo guy at the end and our local poet/chef are way too hot not to be dateable (I think) though lol
As someone who is also back to college, as well as who has spent a lot of time working on adopting the ideal that is like "as long as your mental health is good and you feel like you can keep going", I'm glad that you can still be proud of yourself even if you feel like you haven't contributed as much as you may have wanted to originally. People who love the project will still be here no matter how long, so take your time and I look forward to the future!
