Played the demo and as a someone who never played Phasmaphobia the tutorial feels lacking. Not all items are even in the training mode, and some basic mechanics are not explained, and even what I have inferred about them through trial and error could just be wrong. For example: what sanity does and what effects turning on the lights has are basic mechanics that I have at best an educated guess at after experimenting. The crucifix wasn't clear to me without testing (did you have to be holding it on you or on the floor? what range is it effective at? From testing it seems like on the floor and in the ghost room only, but I can't be sure). A lot of the basic info is tucked away in the "Ghost Files" tab but there's nothing in the tutorial to point you towards that.
It also doesn't help that tools feel temperamental in function. I've crossed Candle off the list of possibilities numerous times after putting one in the ghost room and having nothing happen to it the whole time, only to later discover it was a ghost that interacts with the candle. Same with the EMF reader, which seems to only ever go to 5 when right on top of a ghost during a manifestation (not even during a hunt) and never when on top of objects the ghost is interacting with like the description suggests. The UV light seems to only reveal prints within a couple seconds of being turned on, even though the light persists long after, and I've only ever managed to get prints to show up in salt, never anywhere else. Similarly I've had ghosts apparently just choose not to interact with the spirit box no matter how much I hung around with the lights out and it on and ghosts that were sprayable but didn't turn green when sprayed while hunting.
The "occult artifacts" were also not clear to me from the tutorial alone. The info about the red book is buried in the notepad file and the info about the blue plate is only on this page (and I don't even know where the bamboo sticks mentioned here are or what they do).
The ghost regurgitating your stuff in the toilet when using the blue plate is cool, but the items sometimes go behind the toilet and can be unreachable, or even clip through the wall. When she regurgitates stuff on her own (if she does, she sometimes just won't) it can be a pain to try and find it. I could see this being an incentive to bring multiple copies of equipment, though.
Oh and when she regurgitated me into the racks in the garage once I got stuck in them and had to quit to menu.
All that being said, I think the basis of the game is good, and in some ways I enjoyed spending time figuring out how the game works. I think it's just a bit too much to ask of new players with the current tutorial, and the inconsistency of ghosts interacting with tools makes it even harder to figure out. It's not in a state where I'm willing to put money on the full thing yet, but I could easily see it reaching that state in the future, especially if the ghost gets an alternate model or two.
