TL;DR I really enjoyed it !

Detailed thoughts :

At first I was a bit confused why I could pick up the coin but not the other objects, then i saw the coin counter and it made sense. I really struggled on Cookie, especially when the sound attacks are all close to the ground, it felt unavoidable and unfair. Then I persevered and I realized, like in good old gameboy games, that you definitely could avoid it if you saw it coming and moved exactly the right way !

Then came Cream, which was really fun ! My only small gripe is the items were sometimes so fast and grouped together that you were forced to take damage, but it happened quite rarely so that's okay. I liked the chaos ! The fact it sped up at mid-life took me by surprise (even though since Cookie also had a change at mid-life I could have seen it coming) and killed me a fair few times.

After many many tries, I finally managed to beat the game and it felt great !

I loved the sprites and the cuteness of the characters. The music was cool, engaging and not repetitive, which is a big plus when you're dying in a loop !

Great job, I had a great time ! :)

I like the music loop, and the little hopping animation the train carriages make :)

Nice job !

Thank you so much !

To be honest that's probably what will end up happening if I find the time to expand on this project :)

The art compliments mean a lot coming from you, thank you !

And yeah I spotted and fixed so many little things that did not want to stay in the display resolution (like the particle shader, oh god the particle shader...) but somehow the font ended up 1 px too small and with a weird half-pixel offset. Oh well.

Thank you so much, I'm so glad you had fun !

Noooooooo I was so careful and tweaked so many things so it aligned to the grid, even remade the font to a bitmap so it scaled ! But the font parameters were 1px too small and the outline was somehow offset by 0.5px T.T

Thanks for telling me, at least it's fixed in the post-jam version :)

I really liked this game ! It starts slow and ends with projectiles flying everywhere breaking everything, it felt great !

It's just long enough to feel satisfying without getting old (ha).

For a solo project that's really impressive, congrats !

oh by the way, when you use a controller you can use the full range of the joystick, which is technically against the rule, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The graphics in this game are absolutely stellar ! The characters, the animations, the transitions, everything looks amazing.

Gameplay-wise this was pretty interesting, in particular the enemies were varied in behaviour, which kept the game fresh. I especially liked the Dune-like worm that was lured by bombs.

The only small thing that I felt was a bit missing was some form of score after a level, like knowing how much gold I got vs how much was on the island for example.

A top contender, great job !

small bug report : I think the timer keeps going even when the game is paused or you're in the shop !

All my family was dead, I could not afford to live let alone a mole or a drill upgrade, I spent days trying to earn money only for it all to disappear with everyday expenses.

10/10 capitalism simulator.

Jokes aside : the art is lovely, the sound design is on point and the game feels very gameboy-y.

I was personally very frustrated by the "Paper please" mechanics, but I was also frustrated by the original game so I guess that's well made :D

Another source of frustration was that without a mole, I kept digging straight down only to stumble upon a block I could not mine anymore, and I could do nothing but give up and go all the way back up to try again in a different spot. It did not help that the few I had at the start were killed by perfectly immobile boulders (I would have perfectly understood if it was by a falling or rolling one). And since every new mole was more expensive than the last even when yours die, you're a bit discouraged to buy new ones.

That said, these are just personal frustration and small details, the game is great, it looks great, it's quirky and for a game jam it is quite polished. The palette swaps when you get deeper is a nice touch.

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand anything about this game. I'm stuck on the first screen, I tried interacting with everything but it only prints weird text which I absolutely can't understand.

Due to a bug, the position of the character on screen is located one scare below its position in the physics interaction, which only added to my confusion.

I'll have to review it using only what I saw, which is not much, but I'd be glad to come back to it if anyone has a tip on how to get past the first screen.

The fact it is an actual GB rom is fantastic, so I'd like to give it a chance.

I managed to go to the flag of the first level but nothing happens. Am I missing something ?

I tried the web version and the linux one, and the same thing happens in both.

A lovely game ! The art is great and varied and having so many different mini-games was ambitious but everything worked well ! I laughed out loud when the lady just shoved her 8m arm in the sand, that was a bit unexpected !

I also loved all the different object sprites and the smooth transitions.

Optional observations / constructive criticism if you'd like to continue working on this game after the jam :

  • I would have liked a soft indicator to see the money I earned vs the money I had to make (maybe a chest getting filled or something like that)
  • The sound of the waves is lovely and on the beach the audio is perfect as-is, but in the shop I would have liked some background music for the clients and me :)
  • In the washing mini-game, I struggled a bit to see why some particles were washed and not others below them, I would have appreciated an indicator to better see what I was doing. Maybe the particles start to shake when they're under the water ? or maybe that's just a me problem ^^

I had a great time, thank you very much !

Thank you very much ! I agree, Otis and 1010 did a really great job on these :)
