re: buying houses, it's not ruining the experience, and I've only done the one run since the update, but I'll keep an eye on it in future runs.

I was worried the changes might make things too hard, but on my first go, it seemed to make the beginning a bit harder, but by the end I was doing ok (3x Ballon D'or). It is definitely harder to cap stats and get more than one specialty. Maybe if I had sacrificed some stat points to start buying specialties earlier it would have been worth it, but it's hard to say without testing a bunch.
edit: also now that I had a reason to buy a house, the house price seemed to increase a bit much each season. I would say to myself "ok at the current cost versus my net income I'll be able to afford one next season" but it would jump out of reach for multiple seasons in a row. edit2: possibly this may also have been affected by rising costs of physios etc. but I remember not buying anything else in that period.
oh hey that's me (juv).
some observations: I'm not sure if I just happened on the magic formula, but season plan: balanced, training focus: finishing (until it is capped, then balanced edit: with a striker obviously) , use all the staff you can afford, and always prioritizing playing time in your transfers seems to work pretty well. I can generally cap all my attributes in the high 90s before my player starts declining, especially with the "rough diamond" trait (though not necessarily get all the specialties). I don't know if "rough diamond" is doing that much, but from the description is certainly felt like the one to pick.
The relationships with family members etc. is interesting, but if it has an effect on player growth or performance, it's not very clear what the relationship is. I did get an interesting interaction with a player who hated me because I turned him in for match fixing while in the Saudi league but I don't know that it affected anything else other than being an interesting story.
Similarly with buying stuff that boosts morale, by the time your stats are up there, your morale is generally very high all the time anyways. I have a save where I've won the Ballon D'Or and am still in modest lifestyle because my morale is already 100. Maybe there somehow needs to be more of a reason to interact with that stuff?
I *think* what it is with the tokens is you start getting one per level once you've maxed out the tree. Which by the time you're trying to grind all the prestige upgrades is not really fast enough (but way better than it used to be at 1 every 10 or every 5 it seemed like). Maybe one way to make the upgrades that help you make more money matter late game is to let you cash in $ for tokens at some high exchange rate?
not likely something you'll want to change for this game, but something to consider if you do another game in the future:
the various elements don't really do anything...I end up always hitting "buy all" on the auras page, and the difference in forging costs are nearly negligible.
I'm never going to look at a tree and see that it has a particular resistance therefore choose to boost that aura because it is likely going to be a different resistance the instant it ticks over to the next tree.
On the browser version, the last 3 times I have returned to the game, everything has needed watering but not provided any leaves or stars?
This didn't seem to happen before I got the watering can. Also I can confirm that the leaves and stars are produced if I leave the tab open long enough, but the situation makes the "and then close the tab and come back the next time you have a spare moment" in the instructions basically unworkable.

re: balancing...I saw someone commenting liking the tradeoffs, but I think there's an imbalance in that it's possible to maximize pitchers without having to swap your coaches in and out, but it seems (unless I've missed something) that you can't have both weighted swing (for bat speed) and film study (for prediction) at the same time.
I mean it's fine if that's intentional, but in practice it means that late game I'm inclined to leave my maxed out outfielders sitting there and only cut/refresh my pitchers.
