Their career:  retired solider, current gardener, ask him about what kind 

One secret nobody else should know:  it yearns for something different, but it can no longer see something new in it's dreams; ever night they choke on molten dirt. 

Why they're riding: He found himself here, in a world that seems not quite his own, and found a job to fly under the radar. He's here to help tend to the train's produce & the aquaponics supporting it. He doesn't put words to the idea of this as an opportunity to find something else.
