The Judges have spent most of the day arguing. Fighting some might say. Violence has plagued the table as we each fought for our favoured contenders.
However, when the dust of the Arena cleared, the results were clear. 23 entries. 7 victors.
The GRAND PRIZE given to the most useful entry. Camp Pinewood by Stolen Fires
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4625705
This one was genuinely hard for us. There was a collection of 5 or 6 that could have taken this prize. But at the end of the day, one stood out, simply because we could actually see it's immediate practical use. If it was sitting beside the GM, you could run it. Simple as. Well done Rachel!
The Best Design prize goes to 1996 by Dan O'Brian
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4616226
I'm not sure this prize was ever in much doubt. The design on this one left quite a few jaws on the floor. Genuine art. On top of that, we loved how it used Embers to reflect on the past. It's just... wonderful.
The Best Prose prize goes to The Arena by Dread & Chaos
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4572219
This won really caught everyone's attenion. Clever, fun, complex, deep and weird. Just how we like it.
The Best use of Weird prize goes to Storm Racers by Alex Clarke
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4577940
A whole new kind of apocalypse to explore. Just don't stop driving.
The Most amusing prize goes to The Copper Curse by Hatman books
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4582638
Imagine you are a copper merchant with questionable quality metal. Imagine that you are the oldest recorded human ever. Imagine a guy writes a story about you 5000 years later.
The So Indie it hurts prize goes to Blood Moon Dance by Alandra Hileman
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4629278
Just quietly making menstrual cycles an aspect of the Weird. Why the fuck not?
The A World you want to explore prize goes to Subway by Chris Stewart
/jam/embers-of-humanity-jam/rate/4578958
For clarity, we want to explore all of the five million different worlds that Chris has come up with this last few weeks. But Subway was our favourite.
You retain IP to any idea you publish on the jam.
We will be judging based on the entry that is most useful at the table.
If one entry is clearly a rip off of another, we'll use our common sense and disqualify the cheater. However, we don't expect that to happen. There are only 13 people in the jam.
Hey, you can upload either one. We'll accept photographs, digital, even scanned copies. Go buckwild!
With regards to size, the 'standard' size that you get when you open most editors is A4 (210 x 297 millimeters, 8.27 x 11.69 inches). If not, it's one of the options you can select when starting the editor. If you are scanning from a country that uses standard letter, just upload that size and we can sort it out if it gets selected for the book.
Hey. Great question!
Firearms aren't a basic skill. They are an expert skill. So normally a character without a rifle expert skill simply wouldn't have a rifle or know how to use one.
If however, a character did pick up a rifle and want to use it, we would normally rule that the skill would start out at 20%. (like untrained basic skills). Unless they revealed it as an expert skill.
Since this situation is not included in the booklet, the GM is allowed to make the call. They may choose to rule that an untrained skill starts at 1%. Which is how basic BRP would resolve it. We've chosen not to get too nitty gritty with Embers and leave some stuff up to the GM to rule.
Hmmm.
I'm not amazing at Itch.io and it seems to be hiding my Changelogs for some reason.
0.7 was a cosmetic update, with the focus on improving layout.
They're all up on the Discord if you'd like to look.
The Playtest version has come down from Itch right now as we ramp up for launch of the 1.0 at the end of the month. (I'll actually be publishing on Drivethru)
