The AI is on a timer at the start. Try to shoot them with the gold bricks before they can shoot you. If the gold bricks on the ground block you from moving on drop the ones you're holding and pick up the ones in the way. Oh and obstacles will block the bullet.

Thank you for the feedback! I should have made the enemy attacks more clear. They shoot on a timer and just sort of instantly kill you.
