Zones, including ports, should not grow from empty lots if they are not connected to a road. Roads include undergrounds utilities (i.e., water and power), so without a continuous road connection to utilities, the vacant lot should remain empty. The only exception to this is that ports do allow "stacking" up to 2 blocks deep from the water to simulate the industrial offshore backend of sea ports like warehouses, rail, landside shipping, etc.

You can tell if a zone is connected to a road and buildable using the inspection button from the control panel on the left and clicking on the zone like the screenshot below.

Hi all! I just released Polonova: an isometric city builder you can play free in your browser.

Lay a road, zone homes, shops and industry, power the grid, and watch empty lots grow into condo blocks and supertall towers. Every system talks to the others (jobs, traffic, water, pollution, taxes), and growth is gated by the infrastructure you build: airports, sea ports and transit, all the way to a city of a million.

A few things I'm proud of:

  • A short guided start on first play, then the map is yours to create
  • After the tour, click 'New' to reroll the map until you find a land-and-water layout you like
  • Four matured lots merge into a single mega-structure
  • Heat-map overlays for land value, pollution and traffic: flip to a bird's-eye view (press H, then V) and see exactly where congestion builds and where a transit hub clears it
  • A generative soundtrack that shifts through six musical eras as your city grows

I built it solo while learning to code in vanilla JavaScript. Coding was human-driven and AI-assisted. Every building is drawn by the game's own code, and the music is generated live in your browser.

I'd love your feedback, especially: how long did it take for your first house to appear, and what made you stop playing?

One tip to get started: the first buildings are the hardest - growth is accelerated by low taxes and you can run at fast speed to get things moving at first. Have fun!!
