Maxine could have been me when her age, though I am a decade older and was a teen in the 90's. I didn't have a Taylor though, or even an Avery. I grew up in a small rural town. Like Maxine I knew I didn't fit. I was a sweet innocent child and for some reason assumed kids got to pick their gender eventually while growing up. Other kids starting puberty and the conversations around how that worked made me realize that wasn't a thing.
Puberty is when everyone seemed to decide I was gay for me. Just like Maxine relentless waves of bullying came from that. I even once did gymnastics (and was the only 'boy' there), but there were no teachers beyond the basics where I was. The only other sports I liked were soccer and volleyball and both only had women's teams in school and since I was considered a boy I couldn't play them.
From 12 or 13 to 16 or 17 I prayed every night I could just wake up and be a girl. At some point I started keeping a list of potential ways to end myself and researched them and the chance of successfully doing it without messing up and making things even worse if I survived. It was either 16 or 17 when I begged my parents to send me to a therapist. I couldn't handle suffering 24/7 anymore and not start trying my list. I didn't have words to communicate the whole gender thing. The only thing I got across was that I was depressed and my mom said "Everyone gets depressed. Suck it up and get over it. What do you even have to be depressed about?" With those words my brain realized their was no help coming and it took all those thoughts I'd had over the years and locked them away. I could still feel them, but I wouldn't know why I felt them.
I spent the next 3 decades as the shell of a person. I tried to date women, I even fell in love at least a few times. The only women interested in me where bisexual women and every single one of them told me "Dating you is like dating a lesbian" quickly followed by "If I wanted to date a lesbian I wouldn't date a guy" and broke up with me. I gave up dating eventually after hearing those words so many times. What was the point when I'd just hear it again and again? I obviously was 'broken' and there was no fixing that. Whenever they would get a sense of the real me they didn't want me. It's been 16 years since I last dated anyone.
I first heard the term 'transgender' referring to kids around the time I was 30. I would break down in tears for all of them when I'd hear their stories and had literally no idea why. It wouldn't be until 2 years ago when my brain snapped, not able to keep holding back everything in that box any more and I'd know positively and unquestionably why. Because I was one of those kids to once and no one had ever been there to help me. I saw myself in them. It's been 2 years now for me since I finally started to transition and I'm 48 now. I lost so very much of my life to bigots like Maxine's mom.
I so need to see Maxine get some sort of happy ending, because she feels like a mirror of myself. Sort of a 'what if' about what it would have been like if someone had ever just cared.
