Great update, keep it up! It would be convenient to add controls to WASD, as many people are used to it.

Thanks for the Chrome details, gbagur — and for taking the time to write all this up! Update 0.8.20 is now live. It adds a Quests tab to the journal (H), lets you choose the Current Oath, clarifies equipment slots, improves keyboard navigation with Backspace as an alternative to Esc, smooths the crossings, and fixes the clipped spell-upgrade cards. I also checked both upgrade schools for all eight spells, including saving and reloading them.
The update reduces several measured performance bottlenecks, especially offscreen fire lighting and long enemy path searches. I cannot promise that your random slowdown is completely gone, so please let me know if it still happens. Loot balance is unchanged for now.

Thank you again for helping improve the game!
Thank you for coming back with such detailed feedback! Four spells already — glad you're exploring that far.
The long slowdowns are especially useful to know about. Do they happen in a particular location or after a specific action? Which browser are you using?
I agree that keyboard navigation needs to be more consistent, especially when Esc exits fullscreen. The bridge transition and clearer equipment slot labels also deserve attention. Your point about loot makes sense too: finding a new weapon should feel more meaningful, and lots of similar items make the inventory harder to manage.
I'll also check the quest display and the upgrade you couldn't select in your screenshot. I don't want to guess at the cause before checking them.
Thanks for spending time with the game and writing all this down — it gives me concrete things to investigate. I'd love to hear how the rest of your playthrough goes!
Ashen Trail is now available on itch.io.
It is a dark pixel-art action RPG set in a frozen world where the dead have lost their voices and memory is more dangerous than death. Follow the last trail through buried villages, blood-red rivers, prison blocks, shattered ships, and the shadow of the Cathedral of the Last Bell.
Explore handcrafted snowbound locations, fight in deliberate real-time combat, collect souls, equip relics, unlock spells, and follow quests shaped by dialogue choices. Rest at bonfires — then return to a world that remembers what you left behind.
Ashen Trail is an evolving browser-based prototype. I’d love feedback on combat feel, readability, and the atmosphere.
