Design Statement
Our team interpreted the theme track as “falling in love with learning something new”, and wanted to demonstrate the highs and lows of the creation process as it related to ceramics and game development. We designed the flow of gameplay to match the energy we heard in the theme track. Curious, energetic, then contemplative. During the development process we recorded the sounds of clay and composed a dynamic environment to experience our jam inspired melody. We pushed ourselves to each try new things, and in the two weeks we fell in love with the learning process of creating Unfired. However, the more a creation is refined, the less flexible it becomes. This is true for ceramics, and game development. Early on in the jam, anything is possible. As deadlines approach, making changes becomes increasingly difficult. Just like rushing to fire a piece of clay in the kiln, last minute changes to a game can break everything. It’s a risk, but we feel the final form our creative vision took was worth it, and everything that had to break to get here.

I never imagined that being a lump of clay could be so much fun!

I really like how camera works. Everything looks so cinematic, and understandable from gameplay perspective.
Materials feels so real, "plop" clay and ceramic sounds create good immersion.
While music with environment provides the vibe overall.

Spoiler for the game: I was so happy that the guide guy survived (or came back to life) at the end. It really warmed my heart!

Thanks for playing Voil! I am glad you liked the real clay sounds, they are all recorded from various forms of clay and contributed to the music and animations sounds too!

Hey! Just played Unfired, and it’s a truly intriguing game.

The character styling and animations are absolute fire, the lore is neat, and the game design feels intuitive and smooth.

The only rough spot for me was the environment — some meshes felt a bit out of place stylistically, the texel density is quite inconsistent in spots, and the lighting is pretty basic. But for a jam version, that’s completely understandable, and the creative vision still comes through.

The story feels cohesive and finished, but it definitely has great potential for a post-jam version.

Thanks for such a unique experience, guys!

Thank you so much for playing and for the thoughtful feedback! Really glad you enjoyed the characters, animations, and story!

The environment is definitely an area where we had to make some compromises with the jam deadline, so your feedback is completely fair. We learned a ton throughout development, and there's certainly more we'd love to explore and polish.

Really appreciate you taking the time to play and share your thoughts!

Thanks for playing! I am so happy to hear you liked our characters and animations! This was my first time making animations and rigging the 3D scans of my creations. SO happy to hear about the polish too, our team put everything we had into this game and focused on polish.
