Description
My submission revolves around “The Destruction of the Empire”. I chose this painting because it was the one that I felt challenged by the most, and gave me an opportunity to experiment with different sounds and harmonic/melodic qualities. I've found that some of my work is becoming a little too consonant, so I wanted to try to make something different. Here are my pieces of music:
Sullen deities
In my short story, the depicted kingdom has denounced their ties to the gods of the land, for they felt that they were the beings that wielded the true power. The gods did not take kindly to this, for they felt they were nothing but generous to the humans that betrayed them. This piece is meant to depict the gods’ sadness, but also their anger.
The choir of destruction shows its might
This piece is where I really wanted to nail that sense of dread. I experimented with this piece by having a rather consonant-sounding choir over-top distorted guitars and synths, and hard-hitting drums to drive home the idea of mighty gods demonstrating their power on the kingdom itself. There's an angelic quality to it, but one that intends to feel more malevolent in nature. This is what I imagined plays when the gods reveals themselves to terrorize the humans.
Leave what you can’t carry
I improvised this piece last minute with the intention of creating a kind of funeral piece that is played by the survivors to mourn those that perished over the previous days. I tried to keep some of the harmonic and melodic ideas from the previous pieces in mind while recording this to maintain cohesiveness.

Drums on the 2nd one surely require some polishing, other than that is quite nice take on the theme smileyface.
So much amazing work here! You convey emotions so powerfully, especially on the second track. This is some of my favorite kind of music, and you do great justice to the textures! Some of the stuff on the first track reminds me Sharks Keep Moving. Great work!
The vibe on the first two tracks was just fantastic, everything felt nicely spacious and the playing was great.
I felt that the 3rd track maybe could've used another instrument with the synth organ or maybe some tweaking of the sound at parts somehow, to make it a bit more lively for the lack of a better word.
From listening all your previous jam stuff and this, you really manage to always nail a great atmosphere.
Stellar stuff!
Thanks a ton, that's really kind of you to say!
I totally get what you're saying about the third piece. I think if I committed to the Easy Mode from the beginning I would've probably experimented more with different arrangements. Originally I wanted to do a funeral piece using a soloist (maybe a clarinet or a cello? this was still up in the air) with the organ playing the accompaniment, but I went with the organ playing the melody last minute since I wasn't quite happy with the other instruments I tried. Maybe next time!
Thanks for taking the time to listen to my work :)
Very nice submission !
You have a very chill style, I really liked it
The first one Sullen deities made think of Last of Us OST, that's the one I enjoyed the most. Nostalgic energy and very pleasing to listen to. Great arrangement as well !
One little thing is that the last one I found a bit too loud compared to the others, but still very cool for a kinda funeral mood as you wanted
Good job !
Thanks for the comment!
It's interesting to me that two people have mentioned the Last of Us OST, because even though I finished up the TV series (i know i know not the same as the game, but still!) about a month ago, I hadn't really thought about the soundtrack since then and didn't really use it for inspiration. Maybe I subconsciously went towards those vibes when writing these 😅
I'd probably agree about the volume - I think that was one of those things that I wasn't able to properly address by the time the deadline came around.
Thanks a ton for listening :)
Definitely getting Explosions in the Sky vibes 😄 Really good stuff, an interesting and creative take on the brief with some really nice melodic choices. It just needs bass man!! Really solid effort despite parts perhaps sounding a little unfinished (life has a tendency of getting in the way I know!) 👍
Yeah the bass seems to be the general consensus 🫠 Maybe next jam I'll just do a bass-only piece to force myself to use them lol
I'm really glad you got EitS vibes. I feel at times I can wear my influences pretty heavily on my sleeve, and they have been a HUGE inspiration to me for many years.
Thanks a ton for listening :)
Nice again the indie band fever dream that you create, its some very nice build up that you progressively add some stuff slowly and slowly and I'm waiting to see what is going to happen. The obvious like some people said, you need a bass at some point to sit us down, it would be SOOO satisfying you have no idea. I like that you tried to go off your comfort zone with some experimentation I think it give a little taste thats puts more originality. Good job :)
Love. Love. Love. I’m getting Explosions. I love it. As a suggestion, just to mix it up, underneath the tremolo guitar, go cray with arpeggiated figure underneath, the drums are holding the beat so let that layer go wild! Arpeggios are safe but could be so much more!
Appreciate your comment! I'll be sure give that a try next time.
Thanks for listening :)
Hey! A really good submission here! Love it. The first song by far is my favorite. You got the feel and tone right in it. The second and last songs were good also. You have a good sense for music and melody. As you noted, the last song felt a little undone and I know that was because you only came back to it at the last moment. Overall, it was a really good submission. Love the instrument set also!
Appreciate your comment!
Yeah I know that there's more I could've done with the third piece (I could probably say this for everything I post on itch!), I'd like to think that it at least captures the essence of how I wanted to conclude this short story. If I would've stuck to Easy Mode from the beginning I probably could've put something together that was similar to the other pieces (not intended to sound like an excuse), but all things considered I'm really happy with how it all panned out.
Plus I'm not really a piano/keyboard player, so I probably wasn't gonna do any better than what I got XD
Thanks a ton for listening :)
Your welcome! I enjoyed it. Those are good thoughts. But as you said, if you were happy with what you got, then it was good. You succeeded!
The first two tracks really needed some bass I think, and the last track I wished it sounded like the other two. Overall good job, nice guitaring/drumming if it's really you.
Hey there, very nice submission!
Loved the almost crossover of The Last Of Us and Silent hill vibes from the Sullen Deities, I could feel some Silent Hill in the other two songs but not a crossover as the first.
I really enjoyed them, I do have a small remark, that may pass with another listen to this, but on a 1st listening I felt the songs to be more fitting of Desolation painting other than Destruction painting.
Take care :3
Thanks a ton! I'm glad you liked what you heard!
I think I went with Destruction because what I have here just didn't quite feel like Desolation. To me, the Desolation stage deserves something that's a little more melancholic, with more empty space in order to best capture the vibe of that painting. I kinda get into that stage with the last piece I submitted since that's the next natural stage of an empire, but I think the Destruction stage was more suitable for the submission overall. Since my first two pieces have a darker, more chaotic tone to them to illustrate the little story I was telling, I felt that the Destruction stage was the one that best fit that general vibe.
Hopefully that makes sense, and thanks for listening :)
