Very interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Dungeon Crawler Jam.

Was looking forward to playing this, it looked like it could be good but unfortunately there was nothing to play much. It is understandable with running out of time, sometimes it is hard to keep up with making the game in a short time limit.

I hope you decide to carry on with it after jam as it will be good to see what you make with it.

Oh man, I was so into this game! Then NEXT! Oh no. Hopefully I can play a complete game next year, this was really good. I was very impressed with what you made so far. Map overlay, changing inventory, quality movement mechanics, you've got a lot here and I would love to play a larger game with it.

Submitted(+1)

Well it's a shame you couldn't finish this because I really liked what I saw!

The writing was solid, the art is beautiful, and the movement feels nice and snappy. Even the combat was kinda interesting with having to point and shoot like System Shock or an arcade shooter.

And maybe it's just me but the inventory management and the look of the UI feels kinda reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid, which is a positive imo.

I know the pain of not finishing an entry on time, my submission in 2023 only had a tutorial level and a couple cutscenes. So I don't know if you plan to finish this post-jam or not, but I think you have a solid base for either finishing this game or a future one!

Good work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you liked it.
And yes, I practically whole-sale copied Metal Gear's UI.
It was supposed to be place-holder, but became less-so the closer the dead-line grew.

Submitted(+1)

Sweet!

I loved the snappy movement and the overall look.

As soon as I saw the wall texture: I was like: Woah! This looks so familiar! I drew a similar texture decades ago (also for a crawler) here you go: same vibe https://github.com/LutzGrosshennig/amiga-xeno-dungeon-crawler

It is a pitty that it is so short, would not mind playing more of it after the jam!

That is remarkably similar.
I guess its just that sci-fi thing of 'put a ridge in something to make it look hi-tech'. 😁

😁

The basic mechanics (shooting, inventory, map, etc.) look quite appealing. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of the game, but it makes me want to explore the ship and see more of it.

Submitted(+1)

I love the look of this and the bit of writing I got to read.  Seeing the map made me excited for what I was going to explore... Sad that's all there is to it :,(.  Looks like the start of something nice though!

Submitted(+1)

Short, but all the stuff needed is there!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks.
Your playthrough is up now.

The crawling was great, the writing was humorous and well done and the combat seemed like it was solid and I was looking forward to an awesome adventure. I really like the ship layout from looking at the map you could popup.

Unfortunately, as you stated you ran out of time and such is life with game jams. This had great potential and I hope you finish it post jam as I would love to see a more complete experience because I liked what I saw!

Thanks a lot for the playthrough.
I'm glad people seem to be digging the intro.

Tho it's a very short prototype I think the idea is really good and it was enjoyable. The heads-up minimap could be bound to a hotkey and the weapons to 1-2-3... blending in the controls of a traditional shooter.

Also I think it's a really good / creative way how you handled the time shortage :D Rather than leaving it more or less unplayable you made it into a game that has a beginning and an end. This could have been a cliffhanger to a really short, comedig prologue chapter, having the protagonist waking up from his sleep to a sudden danger in the next one - or running this "nothing ever happens" gag for some short chapters before a sudden twist/turn of events. - Maybe more shapeshifters or an invasion? Having some reminiscense of Prey (2017) where shapeshifting enemies (among others) was a nice gimmick.

Thanks for the feedback!

I can relate with not being able to finish on time. You had some good story at least. I had to cut story entirely, haha. Well, it looks cool and is rather funny too. The gun sounded nice and chunky.

I think one of the best compliments I could receive as a developer in a game jam is, “Wow! I wish there was more.” and your game does this for me.

Wow! I wish there was more! I love the characters and am just sad this isn’t a full game.

If you want to watch my playthrough, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/1SWQhz5aIbI?si=_PrVH1mrUCya05Hj&t=5471

Thanks for making this!

While the game both starts and end rather abruptly, I did enjoy the dialogue and the incorporation of the justification for it being so limited into the story. That story was also really well written. Would have been really cool to see the game expanded slightly, even with the same story / premise. Mostly repeating the same cycle over and over.

Playthrough x2 here: https://youtu.be/8FttKGMeGh8

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for the playthrough!

I get the issue with the turning.  I'm usually OK with it as long as the geometry isn't rotationally symmetrical, but I would have liked to put some more "visual anchors" or tile variety into the graphics with more time.

The full-screen thing, it cycles from x2, to full-screen, to x1.  It probably didn't need to work that way, and was obviously confusing.

I was surprised you still managed to beat the game after spending your ammo, since that wasn't something I had time to account for.

The reason the game is so short is on the day I was gonna crunch the level design, I realized the aiming system was broken.  That's why you were only able to punch the target when looking left or right.  (Still wanna figure out what was going on there.)

I'm glad you still liked the writing and some of the effects like the punch.  You can give it some "Gum Gum Ora Ora!!!" if you spam it.  And you actually stumbled across an alt (well, subtraction) bit of dialogue, where if you're already healed when you collect the scanner, the Computer won't comment on your Health.

I love the writing, and the crawler engine looks and feels solid and appropriately retro. Shame it's so short because I wanted to shoot some alien baddies!

Submitted(+1)

It's funny and the ending (while abrupt) feels very realistic.

Submitted(+1)

Looks great and you got it to take up barely any space. But then again it is in space and just two rooms. I had to replay it cause I thought I got the bad ending. Third time I read your info about the game ending there.

Keep at it.

Great concept and the characters and dialog were well written. If you update this game in the future I would definitely play again, the combat seems like it would be fun with more enemies. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thankyou!
I put the Dungeon of Debt playthrough up BTW.

Submitted(+1)

I killed this poor shapeshifter, taking the form of a target was probably not a great idea as it was never going to end well for him but I still feel sorry for him.

This was promising, I like everything about this small part, from the visuals to the sound effects and snappy gameplay.

Developer(+1)

Thankyou.  I wish I could have done a bit more before the deadline.

Submitted(+1)

I would love to see it finished, it looks full of charm
