So glad I randomly got a chance to play this all the way through before the jam ended! At first I thought it was a little slow but as soon as I got the first upgrade I had a feeling you were going to really deliver with this one. Every bit of exploration and added mechanic felt great and kept me curious to keep going! Really amazing work all around, absolutely loved it.
Thank you a ton! it makes me really happy that you enjoyed it this much! :D
Great game, i love the visuals
thank you! (◍^ᴗ^◍)
That was a really cute game, great job! Clever use of the physics engine to set up the worm.
Thank you! :3
wow that is an amazing game in ever way can you tell me please how did you make the worm animation
Thank you!
The worm is actually a series of physics objects tied together like a chain by rope joints, it has no "real" animations, its movement it's just the result of applying forces to its different components.
Here's a link to an example chain/rope project made by MrMen (who is very active in the gdevelop forums and always has good advice) that helped me understand how to make one
https://mr-men.itch.io/linked-chain-demo
If you want to know how the actual wiggling of the worm works; when the LMB is clicked, I start a timer and when a certain interval has passed apply a force to the "butt" of the worm so it coils up a lil bit; then, I start another timer, which reaches the same interval and propels the worm head forward. Here's what that part looks like abstracted:
Thanks for asking! And if you need something more specific, don't hesitate to ask!
thanks you save me a lot of time for my next project hope that you will win a prize your game is one of the best in this jam
Awww... Thank you so much! Glad I could help! ^v^
This was very fun spring RMB was really fun to use to jump all over the place. Just one question, are froggies supposed to eat you? They never did anything to me i even stood still to check it out.
Thank you!
And yes, they do; although I purposefully made them so they fail sometimes (real frogs are really clumsy and dumb) but It's definitively weird that they NEVER get you, thanks for sharing that! I will try to figure out what's going on...
Thanks for letting me know!
love the art style and the mechanics! good work!
Thankyooou! (◍•ᴗ•◍)
Great game, the art is also quite nice! I like the game's name.
Thank you! (I'm a sucker for puns, I can't help it)
Such a great game! Felt super original and the gun was a hilarious touch. Well done!
Thank you! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
My favourite game of the whole jam by far. Dynamic music is a super nice touch. I'm not really seeing the "overpowered" aspect though.
Glad you liked it! The idea was to start as a quite incapacitated creature but slowly gaining more power to the point where what before was a tortuous endeavour becomes quite breezy; but I do recognize that I didn't make the greatest job implementing that character development pipeline
Thanks a lot for the feedback!
Loved this little game
Yay! That makes my sad tiny indie dev heart become a lil less sad and tiny ^o^
This was really cool! Had a similar idea for years, but haven't really figured out how to execute it. The game was simple enough, but difficult to master. I could've sworn that holding the RMB while pressing LMB somehow made it smoother in the beginning. Until it was overwritten with the launch mechanic. :D (Might just be a placebo). Eventually the "overpoweredness" emerged also, and oh-boy... 😅 I liked how the toad would go for you with the tongue. Also very stressful! In the end couldn't get rid of the flies and that's how far I got.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :3
But no, holding the RMB shouldn't help you (at least technically speaking)
And just one thing; where it was precisely that you stopped? Was it after getting the wings? Did you follow the path upwards just after getting them? (I'm just asking to see where my game design failed)
I didn't get wings LOL. 😅 Trying to be discrete here to avoid spoilers. Maybe it's just me, but didn't get past the flies.
Okay, I see more or less where my mistake is then.
Thanks for the feedback!
I loved your game, I would love your feedback on my car racing game too.
"Yeah, is this the PGFC (Peak Game Finding Center)? We can shut down our operations now."
awww, naaah, you're exagerating... (◍•ᴗ•◍)
What a great game! It made me laugh so much—at first it looked like a rattlesnake doing the moonwalk, and then after picking up the superpower, it was all about jumping!
Thanks!
I did not expect such a cute game to make me so furious haha, but as soon as I got the wings I was so satisfied. You did a great job with this game, congratulations!
Thanks a lot! I was kinda worried that the first half was too slow and tedious, but it kinda had to be a liiiil bit like that so when you start getting bigger upgrades they feel like you're really stronger than you should. I think that the roller coaster of opposite sensations is worth it, though... Idunno °^°
I agree with you, I do think a little adjustment to the normal move speed would help it not fell as sluggish, especially in the mud.
Yeh, you're probably right. Thanks for the constructive criticism!
One of the best games in this jam that I managed to play, original idea, great graphics and perfectly suitable sound effects and music, this game definitely has potential, it feels like it was made with soul.
Well-deserved 5 stars for everything except game design, the game definitely has optimization problems, it looks like you placed the whole game in one scene and do not manage unused objects (which are out of sight), you should divide the whole game into levels and load new ones and delete old ones depending on the player's progress, for example, this can be done through external layouts (I recommend) or by dividing the game into many scenes, which will not be so clean, but the game will not slow down on low-power devices such as phones or laptops, this is not criticism, I just want to help this game become a little better, but you definitely did a good job.
Good luck in the future!
Thank you so so much for the feedback! It is really useful and greatly appreciated!
Your suspicion was right; it's all a single scene. I have no idea how to optimize a game and I'm most definitely a begginer when it comes to technical knowledge; my focus usually ends up circling around game design especially, followed by art, music and sound. The situation is so bad that I had a massive frame-rate drop at a very specific point which I only managed to half-fix 20 minutes before submission.
So one question; by external layouts you mean something like tilemaps, right? (I've been wanting to get into learning how to do them properly...)
https://wiki.gdevelop.io/gdevelop5/interface/scene-editor/external-layouts/
Aaa thankyousomuch
I thought you already used the tilemap, that should probably help too
I am kinda scrappy for this kind of things (or how I like to call it: "creative").
The way I did it was using plain-colored square and triangle sprites for ground collisions and then creating a tiled sprite with the dimensions of each square to give it texture, then the grass and borders are made with the "beveled edges" visual effect applied to a whole layer (this is also true for the mud/dirt) which is probably HIGHLY inefficient, but I felt proud of coming up with that whole shabang.
Cute game! :) very fun to play!
Thank you! :D
Funny little game, enjoyed worming around like a worm. Well done! Though I must admit that being a worm didn't feel that overpowered...
Thanks! the idea was to create a contrast between the early stages of plain worming to fliying around with a gun, but I think it's true that in the end it came out a bit underdone :/
And thanks for the feedback! :D
Cute little game! I liked the concept of getting the upgrade and having to use it to advance in the game!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Best game I've played in the jam yet. I love everything about it.
Yaaay! Thank you! That makes me so happy!
